Find an article that relates in some way to the things we have been talking about in class. Summarize the article, then respond to it in some way. Agree, disagree, or other. Why did you pick it. How does it connect to our class. Include a link to the text. Should be about 250 words in length.
In this post by Planned Parenthood, they are shining a light onto America about Trump’s plans to defund and ultimately do away with Planned Parenthood facilities and all they have to offer women. The post is trying to open up women’s eyes and tell them to reclaim the rights to their bodies that they are entitled to.
“Trump has promoted two bills that politicize abortion including a 20-week abortion ban.” Trump privately signed a bill stating that states could not use federal money to fund Planned Parenthood and their services reversing the bill Obama had had previously. This not only harms women, but families as well and their economic security.
I disagree with the GOP and their decisions on Planned Parenthood because I ultimately believe old white men shouldn’t have the choice to decide what is right for my body and my family. If the government can say I don’t have a right to a legal abortion, what about forcing women towards sterilization and more drastic approaches? The concept that seems so hard to wrap my head around is how women can’t choose the right to safe and legal contraceptives, but men have the choice everyday to kill children when they masturbate. Women are held to higher standards than men when many of the standards they are fighting over are similar. I truly believe it is unfair what the GOP has in store for women in the near future. This now has been the biggest attack on women’s basic fundamental reproductive rights. I believe it is time we stand up and fight for our rights.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BO9-XoWgd_o/ This is a quote I found on Instagram. It states, “The self-righteous scream judgments against others to hide the noise of skeletons dancing in their own closets.” Its author is John Mark Green.
The way I interpret this quote is, the “self- righteous” are people who claim to be morally superior to others. He uses the word “scream” to emphasize how loudly they are passing judgement. The louder they are, the more it drowns out the noise of the dancing skeletons in their closet, but it isn’t really about the noise. The skeletons in the closet are about the behaviors that the self-righteous should not be doing. Since the skeletons are dancing, I feel like this could mean they are actively doing things they shouldn’t. Instead of something they had done, it is something they are doing. The more they point out unrighteous acts of others, the focus shifts to those people. With the attention on others, the less likely someone will notice their actions. I chose this quote because of the discussion of hypocrisy in class. I agree with this quote. It is much easier to say, “Look at what that person is doing” rather than, “Look at what I am doing.” No matter how big or how small, whether one is trying to hide it or leaving it out in the open, does EVERYONE ALWAYS hold to a moral standard?

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2018/02/01/arizona-house-votes-to-expel-lawmaker-over-sexual-misconduct.html In this article the main the point is that Republican Lawmaker Rep. Don Shooter of Yuma from the state of Arizona is one of many that has been voted out because of sexual misconduct. Mr. shooter was under investigation for months and he states that his people voted him in so, they should be the ones to vote him out of his seat. He also admits that what he did was wrong and states that he can’t change the past but he changes the future. The reason I picked this article was because many government officials that we voted for have doing some stupid shit all because they have the power and think that they can get away with it. Which is wrong we voted for them so that they can be our voice in the senate, and at the house of representatives we did not pick them to sexually harass a person. I do agree with the people that voted for him to be kicked off his seat because who wants a guy like this who is sexually harassing women just because he thinks that he has the power to do so. This is similar to what we went over in class about the senator who had an affair and wanted his mistress to have abortion which is why state we voted for him so that he could be our voice not have any affair and then telling her have an abortion no we need better people to represent us that we can trust and a have faith in them that they won’t do anything to look stupid all because they have power.

The article I came across is about Mohandas Karamcand Gandhi. It basically explained how Gandhi wanted to gain independence from Great Britain. He led a civil disobedience that lasted eight years, but did included many difficulties(was thrown in jail). Also had many nonviolent protests, which is rare to hear of. An example of a nonviolent protest is a hunger strike. It also explained that he had a ascetic lifestyle, which included prayers, fasting, and meditations. In the end India did receive independence from Great Britain in 1947.
I selected this article because Gandhi is a perfect example of a person with integrity. Integrity being having good morals and honest. His actions and the way he approached situations was with good morals. He believed something and stuck with it until the end. He didn’t have to violently protest to his points across.Which, in today’s society it seems difficult for people to protest that don’t include violence. that Also cared about others not just himself. Unlike some political figures we talked about in class lacking some qualities to be considered a person with integrity. Which is crazy how we vote for these political figures that do not have it.

This is an article entitled, “Oklahoma Man Sentenced to 15 Years’ Probation for Falls Creek Rape” by Jarred Burk. 36 year old Benjamin Lawrence Petty got off with 15 years of probation for the rape of a 13 year old girl at the Falls Creek Camp he worked as a cook at and she attended. Petty was found guilty of 1st degree rape, 1st degree rape by instrument, and forcible sodomy in 2016 and was sentenced to three 15-year suspended sentences which will run concurrently.
Petty told the young girl he was going to show her tricks with a device he brought to the camp. He took her to a cabin and proceeded to tie her up and forced himself upon her. The District Attorney stated that Petty is Legally blind and that the family lived in Texas and did not want to travel back and forth for the trial, played a role in the decision of his consequence. Also the family gave the DA’s office permission to negotiate a plea agreement. The family also decided to file a lawsuit against the church/ camp for “failing to protect their daughter”.
I completely disagree with this decision made for his sentence. Benjamin Lawrence Petty deserves life in prison. It is astounding that the Justice System has no moral value and let this man walk with a slap on the wrist for raping a child and scarring her for life. That man is still on the streets and most likely did not learn his lesson all because he was “legally blind”. Petty knew exactly what he was doing and should face maximum consequence. As for the family, they don’t deserve to raise children. They care so little enough not to travel for a court case of this magnitude because it is an “inconvenience”. Neither do the parents nor the DA’s office has a shred of integrity and all should be held accountable for the decisions made that affected this child’s life forever.

“Zero tolerance means consequences for everyone, no matter how great the legacy.” Quoted by Nancy Pelosi in a press release statement with Meet the Press News host Chuck Todd. Chuck Todd included of how Congress woman Nancy Pelosi had defended President Bill Clinton’s sexual misconduct allegations. “President Clinton was being impeached do to sexual misconduct allegations, which had nothing to do with the performance of his duties.” We see this also come into play with the child molestation allegations of Congressman Conyers head of judiciary committee. Chuck Todd had asked Pelosi: “What is a fire able offence? You say, “zero tolerance”, but Conyers who already had due process gets to stay.” Pelosi stated that “Congressman Conyers needs new due process and that why I have forwarded this case to the ethics committee.” I believe that Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi is a Hypocrite and displays the true meaning of Hypocrisy. “John Conyers is an Icon in or country. He has done a great deal to protect women.” Congresswoman Pelosi please look at your previous statements. “Zero tolerance mean consequences for everyone.” your praising a man accused of child molestation allegations just because he plays a pivotal role in women’s rights. Congresswoman Pelosi how can you basically say that it depends on the circumstances as to whether its ok for sexual misconduct vs. child molestation charges that it is that is hypocrisy. It’s ok for a man of power and give monetary value to just give a large lump sum of cash to shut someone up, stand up and put your foot down for “Zero tolerance” like you quoted earlier.

https://www.conserve-energy-future.com/causes-effects-solutions-of-overpopulation.php
This article discusses various solutions to the growing threat of over population. These solutions include better education, family planning awareness, tax benefits or concessions, and knowledge of sex education.
I agree with the proposal of a better education and making it a cultural norm to have a maximum number of two children. Though, after watching the science fiction film Idiocrasy, I worry that in time this solution would cause an even greater increase in uneducated people, since their lack of education would make them less likely to conform. In turn, there may be a steady decline in educated people, potentially breeding a much larger scale of uneducated people. The author does counter this problem by mentioning a greater tilt in tax benefits or concessions. This could produce positive results by making it even harder and scarier for the uneducated population to raise more than two children. Furthermore, we can implement an elementary school curriculum that would teach awareness of overpopulation to children, much like the “Hugs not Drugs-Red Ribbon Week” tradition that has spread throughout various elementary schools.
Though these solutions may be productive in slowing the rate of overpopulation, it’s in our nature as humans to want to breed. As the years roll over, people will continue to populate the earth. Personally, I have yet to discover a solution that doesn’t correlate in some way to birth control or human extermination.
This relates to our critical thinking discussion in class about 2Br02B by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. because we spent the majority of class proposing solutions to overpopulation.

In this article, “Anti-Gay Activists Who Were Caught Being Gay”, the author talks about some of the conservative anti-gay activists that were caught in scandals regarding their sexual behavior with other men. These included state, national, and church leaders that had voted vigorously against same-sex marriage, anti-discrimination laws, and preached about the marriage being defined only between a man and a woman. Pastor Eddie Long had made claims that his church would be able to “deliver” people from homosexuality. But as it turns out these anti-gay activists had been engaging in homosexual activities behind closed doors. Some of them hired male prostitutes, others dressed in drag, sent illicit pics through gay dating sites, and others used their name and power to engage in sexual behavior with teens that attended their church. This text condemns the hypocrisy of these men. They posed as anti-gay activists in the public eye but were engaging in gay-sexual relationships behind closed doors. The reason I choose this article was because it relates to the discussion about hypocrisy that we previously had in class. I completely agree with this article, it holds these people accountable for their dishonest and hypocritical behavior. Some people miss out on knowing great people because they have convinced themselves that they are right, therefore anyone who disagree with them is wrong. It is a bit mind boggling that these folks didn’t think long and hard that their behavior would come to light eventually, or that they would be so hard against the gay community when they are gay themselves.

In this article, Brian M. Rosenthal announces that the federal government recognized the wrong doings by the Texas Education Agency, which deprived special education services to a multitude of students with disabilities. Many teachers and advocates for disabled students helped discover the agencies “enrollment target” which placed a cap on the number of students who receive services. Rosenthal acknowledges that “the share of students receiving special educational services in Texas dropped from 11.6 percent in 2004 to 8.6 percent in 2016 – a difference of about 150,000 children.” Additionally, the education officials abused their power by restraining teachers from diagnosing students battling with learning disabilities and enforcing the school districts to follow the “enrollment target.” As a result, the T.E.A. breached two federal laws such as, “requiring schools to serve all students with disabilities” and “[requiring] schools to evaluate students as soon as a disability is suspected.” Currently, the federal government is in the process of supplying thousands of students with special educational programs and devising new actions to help students “receive compensatory services.”
I chose this article because this is one of the huge problems in the educational system. Sadly, many students in Texas weren’t receiving the proper educational services they need to succeed in school. I believe this article connects to our discussions in class because it relates to the problem that schools in Texas aren’t teaching and encouraging critical thinking among students. Due to the lack of critical thinking not being taught in the schools, I believe many adults overlooked the lack of educational needs for students suffering with disabilities in school across Texas.

In this article by The New York Times, the three authors Jillian Jordan, Roseanna Sommers and David Rand, hypothesize why our reaction to hypocrites is so strongly negative, even if it has a positive impact on something, the example they used is a coworker in an office stating that it’s morally wrong to waste electricity, thus encouraging people to turn off their office lights when they leave, however in their own home they fail to save electricity. The authors state that the problem isn’t in the impact they have, but the false morality they claim to have. This hypothesis was supported when the authors found out that people excused hypocrites when they admitted to practicing the behavior they find morally wrong. The example they used was “I think it’s morally wrong to waste energy, but I sometimes do it anyway.” I agree with the article, to me admitting to your hypocritical behavior could also be a sign that you could be working on making yourself better, especially because nobody is immune to being a hypocrite. At best the kind of infuriating hypocrisy is annoying, at worst it’s threatens equality in America. Policy makers that demand that planned parenthood be torn down when in private they demand their mistresses get abortions isn’t even the highest it could escalate to. Hypocrisy is arguably a part of life; however condemning people isn’t. In my opinion it’s better to silently work on yourself and your own hypocrisy, then to condemn others for behaviors that you may practice. It offers an easier way of life, and can actually lead to personal improvement.

In this article it talks about the aspects of what we are currently dealing with as a country. As of late since our new president Donald Trump has taken over a new wave of Racism, bigotry, sexism, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, homophobia, and xenophobia has taken over stronger than in recent years. We were told at a you g age that we should treat others how we would like to be treated. So where did the lesson go? Why is it that such inhuman things can go on? Where is the equality? These past couple of months we have seen a huge rise in hate groups and actions on minorities as well as people who are different as in sexual identification and such. In the past couple of months through a poll it has been found out that half of blacks and one third of Hispanicsim recent polls have gone through racism. To be treated differently in a society that supposedly has equal oppportunities is disgraceful. I myself have undergone racism at a young age that it can anger a person and ask questions like “Why do they treat me like this?” And “why am I categorized as a bad person if they don’t even know me?”. On my street this elderly woman hated my friends and I…well only the brown ones. Called the cops on us multiple times for “vandalizing” when we would write with chalk for fun and “trying to steal” with no evidence or cause. It’s not that all these racist people have suddenly come outs of no where. They have always been around but when the president himself does actions that are questionable it leads an example and the rest follow it. Racism leads to violence and a higher mortality as well. According to recent studies, racism affects the health of those afflicted by it in a drastic way. They are more likely to have health problems due to cortisol levels and usually tends to high blood pressure and obesity as a few examples. Racism is not a biological trait and it is learned. Education and compassion can be the key to loving ones self and others around you but when you have a person with power who people look up too the rest follow in his footsteps

In this article, it talks about the high amount of difference in race for those who go to federal prison with African Americans getting a prison sentence of nearly twice that of white people. Florida apparently has been working towards trying to go against this stereotype and has been trying to give equivocal sentencing. The war on drugs was a big factor in the difference in numbers between the white and black population in prisons due to drugs being more readily available amongst African Americans, due to the easy to get into drug market in the 19th century leading to millions of them being arrested for non-violent crimes. At the end of the article it says that Florida’s current system is “reminiscent of that of the Jim Crow era”(The Editorial Board) and is in high need for reform.
The problem this nation is facing is a bias towards those who are of different color than white people, black people being the main example however applying to almost all people without white skin. If drugs are a big part of this problem then terms for them should be reduced or replaced with sentences because if a white person has marijuana it will wildly be ignored but if a black person is using it then that person would have a higher chance of being arrested. While it is mostly racial bias it will happen fairly often resulting in a very unreasonable sentence for the mere ownership, none the less, use of the substance. It is an unreasonable violation of many of the US constitutional amendments the most prevalent being the 14th as it says all citizens are equal under the eyes of the law and if African, Mexican, Asian, and other Americans are citizens why are they given sentences different to other citizens.

Last month a Louisiana teacher, Deyshia Hargrave, was detained and arrested at a school board meeting regarding a ten thousand dollar pay raise for superintendent Jerome Puyau. During the meeting Hargrave calls out “the board” and questions why do superintendents have constant raises in salaries when teachers in their district haven’t had a raise in ten years? Not sure how valid that part is, ten years is a long time to go without a raise. However, she does mention that it’s not fair for the administrators to make so much while students and teachers are the ones who do the work. In the video I linked above, Hargrave is shown being forcibly removed from the meeting for refusing to leave. Many people are appalled by the way this was done as she was pushed to the ground and out to the parking lot. The board argues that it wouldn’t have happened if she had just followed the rules and left when she was told which is probably true. So maybe she was out of “order” and didn’t listen but handcuffs and pushing was not necessary. It went viral and it resulted in death threats towards the superintendent and his family, also unnecessary. Charges against Hargrave were dropped, and she wants an apology from the board. I agree with her on our education system, they have a lot of issues that need to be addressed. I also think it was brave of her to speak out for what she believes is right. It’s good that we ask questions and speak up and exercise our freedom of speech.

When talking about hypocrisy in class, Leonardo DiCaprio stuck out to me. DiCaprio has been advocating against climate change for more than a decade. He has used his platform to speak on the issue, going as far as dedicating his Oscars speech to it. His Oscar win was highly anticipated because it was his first. During his win, he set a social media record of about 440,000 tweets in a minute, which became the most tweeted minute during an Oscar showing. His foundation, the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, has donated more than approximately $30 million to educate people on the dangers of climate change and to protect coral reefs and tigers. His contribution is honorable, but although clearly passionate the problem, it was revealed that he travels on private jets and often parties on yachts. Both jets and yachts use up a lot of fossil fuels. In comparison to commercial flights, private jets have about 37 times the carbon emissions. The amount of carbon footprints DiCaprio has amassed due to his constant traveling is astounding. According to Robert Rapier, an environmental analyst and Forbes contributor, DiCaprio’s hypocritical actions dwindles his moral authority. He even traveled on a jet to collect a ‘green’ award in New York City in 2016. Although being called out, DiCaprio continues to travel in private jets, and is constantly photographed aboard yachts.

Recently, an article titled How To Apologize For Sexual Harassment popped up in my suggested posts feed on social media. It was an article written by Harriet Lerner, a well-known clinical psychologist. The article mentions the many ways in which men in positions of power have apologized for sexual harassment accusations, as well as the “do’s and don’ts” of apologies. Harriet Lerner insists that there is an “art” to apologizing and that there is an unfortunate amount of apologies from sexual assaulters that are essentially what she calls “damage control”. She continues by stating what most of us know to be true; that an apology does not excuse the consequences of a person’s actions.
When analyzing this piece, I found that not only does Lerner possess a very considerate, logical tone, but she also possesses integrity. She is a well-established doctor in her field and has built a lot of rapport in the psychology community. She’s had multiple mentions from sources such as The Washington Post, Forbes Magazine, Psychology Today, and even received praise from The New York Times for her contributions to the study of psychology. She upholds her feminist beliefs by applying them in her work, by sticking up for women with her mighty pen and Ph.D. I chose this article because I believe Harriet Lerner displays a great amount of integrity, as opposed to many of the writers out there who are not as honorable or esteemed.

http://www.patheos.com/blogs/dispatches/2018/02/03/shameless-hypocrisy-nunes-memo/
In this blog, it talks about the hypocrisy behind the whole ordeal around the Nunes memo. The blogger uses facts (logos) to point out the hypocrisy behind the people who claim the wiretapping of Carter Page was not okay. The writer gave a little run down of the memo, saying first that at least one of the three times a wiretap was requested on him, there was evidence used from something called the Steele dossier to get the wiretap. The dossier was paid by democrats and Christopher Steele himself did not want Trump to win the election. With all that said, that bias was not mentioned by the FBI when they requested the warrant, so therefore the memo claims the whole Russia investigation is fake and made up by the democrats to destroy Donald Trump. However, the writer goes on to say that that is complete nonsense because the requests for the wiretap happened much before Carter Page was even a part of Trump’s team. Also, coupled with the fact that Page was caught speaking to Russian intelligence agents and meeting with the second highest ranking man in the Russian government, the bias seems completely irrelevant. The writer also states that “many of the representatives who’ve most vocally touted the supposedly explosive contents of the Nunes memo” (and Nunes himself) are hypocrites because they voted against an amendment that would require a warrant “on queries of the 702 database pertaining to Americans.” This writer does a good job refuting the claims of the memo that he mentions. I don’t know much of the memo (making me ignorant), only what he mentions, so in that sense I would say he provides good facts to disprove the claims that the claims of the Russian investigation being fake, and that the people who believe the wiretapping was wrong are hypocrites.

http://fortune.com/2018/02/04/tesla-australian-homes-solar-power/
This article talks about Tesla corporation’s recent virtual solar power plant proposal that took place yesterday when the Australian state government agreed to accept Tesla’s initial 24,000 home construction project in an effort to bring both the environmental and economic benefits to light and hopefully reach their intended total of 50,000 houses equipped with solar technology.
I found this article very interesting because it cooperates with my feelings toward the environment and it’s limited supply of natural resources. The truth of the matter is that intelligent projects such as renewable energy are often brushed under the rug because of the disengagement of the political agenda. Sadly the majority of global powers such as the United States just don’t bring up topics that refer to securing the environment because our central government has a history of channeling its wealth and focus towards maximizing our military potential. This focus on increasing our countries military doesn’t allow for wiggle room when it comes to funding projects like solar energy. In total this article only touched on the private corporations proposition of this upcoming technology and did not emphasize the obvious benefit of Solar energy such as its unlimited proportionality in contrast with our modern procedures of burning coal in a power plant using the steam from said burning to turn a turbine which is then connected to the underground sea of electrical wires that power our homes. Although the discussion of solar power does not have the political backing it so rightfully deserves I am hoping and praying that the citizens of the U.S. as well as other major economic powers accept our beautiful Sun’s Electromagnetic offering. If Solar power has success in the future humans won’t have to stress about our limitations of coal as long as the suns core keeps thermonuclear fusion going.

Hypocrisy is, in theory, and easily avoidable issue. Standing by core beliefs should be second nature, as they are just that, core beliefs. However hypocrisy is such a ubiquitous issue that an article managed to written about sixteen government officials all of whom were hypocritical on a single issue that should no longer even exist. What was most surprising however was that these men appeared to feel attacked and singled out by their actions, almost treated like a pariah. Randy Boehning went so far as to say he felt he was investigated because of his anti-gay voting record, and that “many of his friends and family did not know [He] was gay.”
This is how hypocrisy seems to work in case after case. The truth will always come out, especially when your actions do not align with your beliefs. To be a critical thinker is to be a person of integrity, and when a person lacks that attribute, they can easily be identified and attacked. Usually left with no reputation worth defending.

This quote on Twitter by Barack Obama is summarized in my perspective as how people learn how to hate or impose such hostility towards others and their beliefs by being different from theirs. Facing detrimental aspects from our current society, many individuals are impeded of their true idealism towards their morals to in other words conform into groups or into society. I understood this quote as in a manner that everyone is of equal level and shouldn’t be thought to be any lesser than another. By seeing both sides of different perspectives, I would think that the idea of having an individual believe is greater/superior to another is quite delusional to the fact that their motives or beliefs should alter another’s perspective but I would concur as to why these actions are imminently happening in today’s society. People are affected by the way they grew up or rather as how the world molded the personality of an individual. As to pertain the topic of difference, few might suggest learning both sides of a story to help you interpret the greater picture of what the causation is actually about. This leads to understanding why some people hate towrds others due to beliefs, race, etc. This quote made me think of what our class is discussing currently that you shouldn’t just abruptly judge another for their differences but rather learn their story/perspective of how they view the world around them to either evaluate your distinctions or to coincide with them.

This article talks about how the recent rise of the mass quantity of school shootings have gotten two republicans to come out and say that there is a link between violent video games/media and the frequency of shootings. One of the politicians specifically call out Call of Duty and John Wick and the other blames it on the desensitization cause by all the violence in media. The writer of the article goes on to present data they found rebutting the claim made toward the link between Call of Duty and violence (because the website is a video game news website).
I think that this article is an example of pointing out flaws in another’s thinking. The writer points out that the politicians didn’t do enough to back up their statements and so they did not critically think. The writer provides evidence of studies done by the APA (American Psychological Association) and by some other scientists that disprove the politicians’ statements. I don’t blame the Republicans for their weak excuse to the problem with gun control in this country because they are crazy about their right to bear arms. I just think it’s sad that there have been so many school shootings in such a short amount of time and there needs to be an end to it soon. The government needs to put on their critical thinking caps and figure out what needs to be done.
