This week we are focusing on visual rhetoric. For the journal, locate a visual to summarize and respond to. It can be an image, it can be an article with an image, or a video. Include a link to the image, article, or video as well.
First, tell us what YOU see in the image. In your own words describe the image to us.
Second, tell us about the visual. What does it mean? What does it signify? Make sure you explain why you chose this image and how it fits with our class.
Take a look at the post for Visual Rhetoric, especially “Seeing vs Looking” and “Images as Arguments.”
In this picture you see nice green field in the shape of lungs, down at the bottom right corner you see torn down trees. This image shows the green trees in form of lungs, which contributes to us breathing which is associated with staying alive. We need to breathe to stay alive but we don’t really think about where the air we use comes from (plant life). When we kill the environment we are killing ourselves and using this picture of real trees and real forest destruction gives out the message needed to make people stop and think about it. I choose this picture because I feel at times we all forget about our environment , and everything around us. This image made me stop and think how bad we sometimes treat it and should try to help it out instead.
Lets take care of our lungs!

The image breaks my heart it makes me want to go and help them. However, the only way to do that is to help them by donating some money. It looks like everything is destroyed and deserted. I wonder were all the people went and how many are missing. The trees are torn and rubbish is thrown all over the place. The house is completely gone and just some pieces of two by fours have fallen over. All the furniture and appliances are missing. The photographer who took this picture wanted the viewers to know that innocent children have been impacted by the hurricane, and are likely missing, injured, or deceased. There is a little toy fire truck in the image that makes me think the people that lived there had children. The glass is all broken and I think there is no insurance to cover their home. Also, there is no electricity and water on the Bahamas. There are no animals around, and I wonder where they are, if the family is ok, and if they got off the island safely. I heard that many volunteers are there to help aid the people on the island who remain in the Bahamas. I know that many other countries and people are sending food and water there. There are many shelters and camps set up for the people to sleep. Many doctors and nurses are on the island to help give treatment and medicine to the citizens of the Bahamas. I don’t know how long this will take to clean up and rebuild the island. I hope that this island can get restored fast and people are able to go back to new homes. I am worried for these people by this image and it concerns me and others for their wellbeing.

The picture that I am posting is of water that is full of plastic bottles and other random debris, clearly the water is full of pollutants. The water is clearly dirty and yet that is still the water that gets ‘cleaned’ and filtered out for us to drink; water pollution is a big health risk and yet we are still having this type of water running through our pipes. This means we need to do our part to help keep our planet clean, we have discussed recycling and keeping our planet clean in class and have also brainstormed of how we can do our part.

The image I have chosen for this journal response deals with another critical topic in America’s society: homelessness. This picture appears in an report just posted today from the
Los Angeles Times about a homeless man taken into custody by the police for the murders of four other homeless men. In the image, the first thing that catches the viewer’s eye is the backside of the yellow police tape followed by a police officer who looks as if he is ready to talk into his uniform’s radio. When I look at this picture, I cannot help but feel the presence of a prevalent message in it. I realize in advance that the picture may just exist to show a crime scene to the general public but the police tape around it conveyed its own message to me. The tape surrounds the crime scene so it’s content is kept away from the public but what if symbolizes the issue of homelessness in general?
What if the homeless people of America is just like this crime scene? Kept in a contained area isolated from the rest of the country’s resources simply because they are unavailable and unaffordable. It is an idea to think about even though it is just a crime scene photo. The reason why I chose this picture is because our most recent topic on critical thinking deals with visual rhetoric and even a simple photograph can convey a big message to whoever sees it.

In This image I see a cat with a cape. This image is advertising for Peggyadams.org, an animal rescue organization. This image shows a cat flying with a cape on, implying the cat is a hero like superman.
This advertisement uses humor to get the audience to remember what is being advertised. This advertisement is also very smart and catchy, making the audience believe if they were to adopt, they would be a hero. Everybody wants to be a hero. This appeals to the compassion in people and also appeals to animal lovers. This also appeals to superhero lovers and action hero nerds.

In this week’s journal response, I choose an image that depicts a child with a halo made of smoke. It is a simple picture with the focus on the child and its halo, with nothing to distract from it. With a black background that might signify the bleakness of the child’s future. The image also shows the child to be looking up to the right as if it was looking at taller person (parent) with zero comprehension as the child has a blank stare with no visible emotion on its face.
What I see in the picture is that even though it might be my choice to smoke, my choice to do so also affect someone else, in this case a child. This would be an advertisement that is against smoke by showing that the children which are innocent or pure are harmed as a byproduct of your choice to smoke. This image signifies for the person to be aware of the impact that your choice has to others. This image was chosen because of the simplicity of it and what it invokes primarily awareness, to stop smoking, and to think of the children. The last one to ‘think of the children’ would primarily be a pathos statement commonly seen in ads to provoke emotions in the person seeing the image and wanting to do an action because of it. It fits in the class because of how a just an image provokes multiple responses and how there is more to an image than just the first glance that can be discussed at length of how the image was constructed.

In this weeks 5 journal I decided to post a picture of a sculpture of two polar bears standing on a small iceberg passing through London. The piece of art was taken right in front of the e Houses of Parliament making a extremely strong statement that we need to start worrying about global warming.
Too me this is very powerful image! Seeing the momma bear and her cub standing there makes me think what if this was real? what if we actually did see something like that. I wouldn’t put it past the world the way we treat it. Antartica is melting causing many animals to die because of global warming. I do not understand why and how people do not see o realize we are killing this planet. It terrifies me to thing my children perhaps even me will go through extreme struggles because people do not understand the harm they are doing. I chose this picture because we have talked about global warming and how to help better this earth. We even started an extra credit trash pick up to help encourage our classmates to do their part. Since talking about it so much I have learned and realized we need to CHAGNE NOW! We have no time to waste.

The post i have chosen is actually a music video that was sent to me from my sister, Acid Rain by Lorn. I chose this because it is hauntingly beautiful and is only fitting to the october spirit. In the music video it has zombie cheerleaders who are doing a mixture of modern/ contemporary dancing gliding through an empty diner restaurant and parking lot with a mixture of elements between “black swan” and “the walking dead”, the result is a slow, sinister anthem for those who have passed into the next life. The piece takes the staples of American pop culture, like the muscle car, diner, and cheer team, and adds a gloomy, ominous touch.

The image I’m posting is in regards to a vape advertising campaign by a company named Juul. The image itself shows young adults who almost look like teens smoking and having a good time. They have other images that are very similar in nature. In my opinion this ad is used to target teens to start smoking. Juul has also become the largest e-cigarette company in recent years despite being fairly new to the market because of this. I personally hate this ad. Company is partly own by a a popular, conventional cigarette company who I feel felt the decline in cigarette smoking ; therefore, decided to target teens out of greed. This has caused other issues in the Vaping world, such as flavor bans in some states and all around the world. I don’t feel like giving an ecigarette a flavor targets teens simply because a child would buy some real candy instead of vaping candy flavor due to cost and it does not satisfy one’s taste buds. The growing popularity of this brand has led to many counterfeit products, which caused serious injuries and death. Vaping is not a healthy habit; however, it is a healthier alternative to smoking combustible cigarettes, and it should’ve stay advertised this way like in the past. These ads should be removed and no further ads showing young adults should be allowed.
