Since we had an extra week off, everyone gets points for journal 10. Journal 11 is this weeks.
For this week, find a source that helps us understand covid-19.
Make sure the source is reliable. Tell us why you think it is reliable. There are a lot of sources out there right now that are not using logic or critical thinking but instead are scaring people, using fear tactics, fallacies, and misinformation. Try to avoid those.
The cure for fear is knowledge. Remember, we fear that which we don’t understand. Let’s build a good reliable resource for information so that we can understand.
I will start out. I heard this great podcast where they talk to a Virologist, a person who studies and researches viruses and diseases. https://www.alieward.com/ologies/virology
Check it out. It helped me understand what we are dealing with.
Make sure to include a link, summary, and analysis. Minimum 250 words.
I like Dr Mike on you tube . He fact checks all the bull crap that the media and politicians spread about covid-19. This video is Dr Mike interviewing Dr. Fauci and they discuss topics such as social distancing. I have fact checked Dr Mike and trust what he says as factual .

I chose this article because she gives a lot of really good information on the virus. Where it comes from and how it attacks the body and so much more. I feel it is reliable because she is an internal medicine resident who works first hand with patients who have the virus. She gives a lot of good reliable sources and ways to protect yourself. I enjoyed watching the video because I really wanted to know more about this virus and what exactly it is that we are facing.

This video has really helped me understand about Covid 19. I haven’t really looked at the news or anything about the virus until I watched this. This video really explains how dangerous the virus is and explains how its not just like the flu. The video uses its resources from the government and from Dr. Fauci. If you think about it we never had a quarantine throughout the world before so its pretty serious. Another thing is that the flu has killed people before but just tens of thousands per year but covid 19 has killed about 60,000 so far. And its only been a month or so. There’s a ton of reasons of how dangerous this virus can be, like the incubation period for it to spread is up to 14 days and we wont feel the symptoms until day 5 through 14 and we can still spread it. When we have the flu its within 2 days. This virus, we need to take it very serious and we need to do this social distancing so we can flatten the curve.

The video discusses misconceptions about COVID-19 and how it can enter the body. It goes into further detail to explain what the virus does to the host’s body. The narrator explains that the virus enters the body and attacks the tissue in the lungs by causing cells to decay. The virus alters DNA in cells and causes cells in the body to essentially self destruct. White blood cells are targeted to go against each other, causing the immune system to become incredibly weak. Specific white blood cells are targeted since they can cause more damage to the other cells in the host’s bodies. The video goes on the explain how the virus is dangerous down the road and how it damages the lungs. The video wraps up with showing the best ways to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and the details of why each method is effective in their own ways. Looking further into the video, the narrator credits lots of experts of helped to create the video on short notice. All of the sources being used are frequently updated and done by several experts in field such as microbiology, evolutionary biology, and quantitative biosciences. Some of the resources also come from Harvard’s studies on diseases and conditions. By looking at the link that shows and credits the research put into the video, I believe it is safe to say the video is reliable.

I chose this Youtube video because I knew it was a reliable source. It is by the Johns Hopkins Medicine Institute, which is a private research university, medical school, and non profit hospital. In the video, the senior director of infection prevention, Lisa Maragakis, discusses what COVID 19 actually is. COVID 19 is a new kind of corona virus that has not been seen in humans before 2019, and there is no guarantee on how this corona virus began. Most viruses that affect the pulmonary system can be spread from person to person, or by surfaces. Others are airborne, and can survive in the air. The corona virus is both airborne and spread person to person. Health systems across the nation are busy trying to provide care for people with corona virus. They are testing thousands of people for this virus, and many are asked to use masks to prevent spreading to the medical personnel.
I also visited the Johns Hopkins website that had more recent information on COVID 19. https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/coronavirus shows that there are many ways that the general population can prevent the spread of coronavirus in our nation, including staying at home, practicing social distancing when near others, and washing your hands. And even when home, we can improve our wellness by exercising, breathing for stress relief, and eating well. All of these measures can help to flatten the curve of increasing coronavirus cases in the US.
I hope we all stay safe as we deal with this virus!

to find a reliable source i went directly to the CDC. they are the ones enforcing the prevention of spreading; even though its not stopping because people are refusing to believe the hype. they give you tips on what to watch out for and how to prevent getting sick, even in the event of a person in your care having contracted the virus itself they allow for the answers to care for said person. yes there is alot of articles throughout the media that are spreading fear and panic but i believe for the best results you must go to the direct source of knowledge. asking your doctor or a medical professional that is not a looney tune is your best bet as well. The CDC explains how to avoid contracting COVID-19 by practicing basic hygiene, which is honestly scary that people have failed time and time again to follow through with. washing your hands, covering your mouth when youu sneeze and cough, maintaining a healthy distance between you and the people around you are all common practices that have been taught to us from preschool and should be practiced daily throughout the duration of your life. COVID-19 has taught me that people are absolutely horrible in their personal hygiene. so in conclusion, stay safe, practice the basics of life and do not listen to the people out there scaring you for the sole purpose of financial gain, fact check always! stay safe, clean and healthy yall! were in this together.

I chose to provide my information through the CDC. The CDC is the best source provided to the public that can help people in times like this. There was hundreds of other articles that are published by people who might put out information that isn’t 100% accurate. But the CDC is also a government agency and is the leading national public health institution in the United States. They provide ways to prevent the spread and how to care for yourself if you believe you are showing symptoms and what to do if you do have a mild case.

In finding the most accurate information in regard to the pandemic that has taken over the globe, COVID-19, a.k.a Coronavirus, I’ve decided to take information directly from the World Health Organizations (WHO) official website. As the population is aware, there has been an overwhelming amount of misinformation that has been spread about this virus since it first made its mark in China. Unfortunately, this misinformation has created huge anxiety in fear in the public all around the world. As COVID-19 made its way to the United States and the rest of the world, it’s essential to be informed by a credible source in order to make decisions based on logic and facts, and to intend to stop the spread of misinformation that can cause the public to react without thought.
The WHO has been a successful and credible organization since the birth of the U.S Declaration on April 7 1948 with more than 7000 people working in 150 country offices, in six regional offices. The World Health Assembly is attended by delegations from all member states, and determines the policies of the Organization- in order to be in works with nations requires education and accurate information. WHO partners with countries, the United Nations system, international organizations, civil society, foundations, academia, and research institutions. WHO’s official website may be the greatest source of accurate information on this virus, along with a number of other viruses, diseases, etc.

This video on YouTube called Coronavirus Outbreak (Covid 1) explained through 3D Medical Animation posted by Scientific Animations was a great video for general facts and visuals for Covid-19. It explains that this disease originated in Wuhan, China from a meat market. It covers what a pandemic is, how the virus attacks the body, tracking the spread of Covid-19, and the recommended precautions. The virus spreads through the air and by touch, people can be contagious before they show any symptoms. Pandemics are a spread of disease that cover a large region or the world and can result in loss in life. Two regional epidemics have raised from Covid-19 such as SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome), and MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome). It has an 8-day incubation period, a week of infection, 9 days to potential hospitalization, 8-10 potential ICU. 2019 Corona Virus is a newly developed strain from the family of the common cold. The virus has the genetic encoding that allows the virus to be able to highjack human cells and turn them into reproducing virus factories. The overproduction of virus leads to cell death. Preventative measures include washing hands frequently, wearing gloves and facemask in public places, stay 3 feet away from someone who is sneezing or coughing, avoid touching doorknobs and railings.
I found this video very informational. It did have a page at the end that listed five references, and the references were from places like Harvard Health, and government infection control cites. I know a lot of people aren’t taking the stay at home rule seriously by still meeting up in public, or in large groups. I think for this virus to be controlled quickly we all need to commit to staying socially isolated and avoid going into public. The longer people keep pushing off being isolated the more likely this is going to take longer to get under control. Like this video mentions some people can get others sick before they show any kind of symptoms. I know I wouldn’t want to be responsible for getting especially my family members and loved ones.

The video I found was titled “Understanding the Virus that Causes COVID-19, Animation” which was published on March 27 by Alila Medical Media. The video is very educational as it discusses the evolution of the virus and how it is infiltrating and damaging the human body. The use of animation really helps the viewer understand what the virus is doing on a microscopic level. I chose this video because I am a visual learning and it really helped me grasp how the virus works, more than any news segment or article would. The source is credible because the channel has been providing their viewers with an in depth analysis on tons of medical information for over 6 years. What I found most helpful was how it was able to break down the information and explain the how and why behind it. Before watching the video I was unaware that their was a total of 7 corona viruses that health care professionals had identified already and that they are classified as either alpha, beta, gamma, or delta depending on the animal it stems from. Alpha and Beta corona viruses orignate from bats and rodents while gamma and delta come from Aves/bird species. There has been two previous cases of the Corona Virus and all 3 have stemmed from bats. The video goes on to discuss the structure of the virus and how it connects to host cells before attacking cells in the lungs. Overall, this video was very informing for me because now I know exactly what our world is going up against and how it operates.

I chose this article/pdf because it comes from a very reliable source: the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This is a reliable source because they publish only fact based information, and their purpose and main goal is to protect Americans from any health threats that may come their way. This PDF/article is chalked full of helpful facts about COVID-19. The CDC says that anyone can get COVID-19, regardless of their age. Being young does not make you “immune”. The CDC goes on to say that the chances of MOST people becoming seriously ill from the virus are low, so most people will only have a mild case, if they do catch it. In addition, they want people to know that individuals who have properly completed quarantine are no longer a public health risk. The CDC also gave helpful tips on how to best protect yourself and keep yourself healthy. These tips include washing your hands for 20 seconds, avoiding touching your face, staying home while sick, and covering your mouth when coughing or sneezing. Lastly, the CDC lists the tell-tale signs and symptoms of COVID-19, so that the public is aware of what to look for and when to self-quarantine. This article lists only facts, not opinions, and it’s clear that the purpose of the article was to inform the public as opposed to instilling fear and panic. For those reasons, along with the fact that the CDC is a highly recognized organization, I believe this article to be completely reliable and helpful when attempting to fully understand COVID-19.

This video takes place on Joe Rogan’s blog, he has an expert who’s been in the medical over three decades talk about COVID-19. The expert mentions how the virus is airborne and masks can’t prevent any individuals from receiving the virus. This virus is relevant to the monster theory because everyone is afraid of this virus due to the unknown which is what makes this virus fearful. The expert says this virus can only be prevented from being quarantined. However, there is no true remedy to this virus as of now. The expert assumes that the Chinese were the cause of this because they were eating food from the underground market; the underground market sells exotic animals for food. Not all of these animals were meant to be eaten; which may stimulate diseases and viruses to evolve. With this in mind, the expert says its best to cautious as possible, to not be around groups, and be six feet apart from individuals.

Nucleus Medical Media posted an animated video that details the COVID-19 virus without being biased. The video is a reliable source that helps us understand what the virus really is. COVID-19 “is a contagious viral infection that attacks primarily your throat and lungs” (Nucleus Medical Media). The video animates in detail in how the virus travels within the people that it infects. When a person sneezes, a droplet of the virus can into another person’s mouth, from there in can travel to the lungs. The coronavirus can directly access a persons cells developing pneumonia. Pneumonia can cause chest pain, difficulty breathing, coughing, fever and chill, confusion, and can lead to respiratory failure. Age and pre-existing conditions cause the virus to affect people differently. Despite news, research for a vaccine is moving along rather quickly.
The video does a really good job in detailing the coronavirus for what it really is. The video also helps people understand how the virus spreads and works. Despite the fear tactics that news media are using, this video provides with factual information using a narrator with a calm and soothing voice. The media on the other hand is causing people to panic. They are also turning this virus into a political advantage. Unfortunately, the country is suffering highly for it. Before the virus got this big, Fox news, a right leaning media outlet, had not taken the situation seriously claiming that the virus was just like the common flue. Therefore, its viewers did not take it serious and possibly helped spread the virus. Now, the nation and the whole world must leave politics aside and come together to beat this situation that we are on.

This YouTube video, by It’s Okay To Be Smart, breaks down the spread of a pandemic like COVID-19 and explains why such drastic measures such as demanded quarantine must be taken. The video begins by describing the quick and unexpected ways a virus spreads using the analogy of lily pads in a pond. If a lily pad was to increase 2x every day it would take 60 days for the lily pads to completely fill the pond. That means that the pond was only half way filled by lily pads on day 59. Additionally, lily pads only took up 1% of the pond by day 54. The lily pads don’t begin abruptly taking over the pond until those last few days, when it’s already too late. This is the same for a virus like COVID-19. The only thing we can do is try to decrease the variable by which it spreads every day. This is where social distancing, washing hands, and demanded quarantines take place. The goal is to take drastic measures early on to flatten the bell curve of an outbreak. This way, health facilities won’t be overburdened and fall apart in consequence. There is a LOT more unpacked in this video and I highly recommend it. It’s connected to PBS and uses actual science, history, and sourced facts to support its claims. The channel is very reliable and the animations used are not only really helpful, but also quite entertaining. This is a must watch for anyone trying to become more informed on COVID-19.

Many people who are not feeling well rush to emergency rooms and urgent care when in fact this may not be the best plan of attack. Due to the fact that there has not been a cure found yet, those who flock to medical buildings are actually at more risk. Many people will recover on their own from COVID-19 those who have been hospitalized or who have died from it are people with compromised immune systems. Unfortunately, the number of tests medical professionals have access to is limited. A friend of mine who is a doctor has informed me so many people are rushing in thinking they have COVID-19, however, because there are people in hospitals, urgent care, and the emergency room who have contracted the virus coming to these places increases your chances of getting it if, in fact, you do not have it or passing it on to someone you may have come into contact with if you do. The best way to protect yourself and those around you is to have as little contact with others as well as to stay hydrated, and wash your hands for twenty seconds. Often we hear to use hand sanitizer as well, however, if possible use soap and water, only use hand sanitizer when soap and water is not available. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2YuDWCX3OkM Lots of videos of handwashing with paint are awesome but do not show people washing their wrists, it may sound weird but, especially if you are alike myself, I often use my wrists to hold open doors or turn on/off faucets so I try to pay attention to that area as well.

This video does a great job explaining what exactly the coronavirus is, how it affects the body, and how to avoid getting it. Corona is a respiratory disease that attacks the lungs and strips them of their defenses. The video goes into detail, teaching the viewer about how this virus can spread through your lungs, and ultimately lead to death in severe cases. Further in the video, it explains that there are two outcomes of Corona. One is a fast pandemic that will cause several problems and ultimately lead to millions of deaths due to an oversaturated health care system, which doctors will be forced to play god when deciding who will live and who will die. The other being a slow pandemic, that may not be good, but is better than a fast pandemic. To ensure a slow pandemic, we must stay inside and limit interactions with other people we do not see on a daily basis (i.e family that you live with). It states that we should continue the safety precautions that are currently being taken to ensure that vital workers remain safe and can continue to keep society running. Lastly, the video reminds us to wash our hands and why washing our hands is one of the most effective ways of staying healthy during this current situation. It is safe to assume that the sources are accurate after researching the doctors that are cited at the end of the video.

I choose this video and research about the CDC guidelines about social distance and new advice about using masks. we are in the pandemic condition, if we everyone will be responsible for our understanding, we can win over this disease. masks will always protective equipment, but healthcare worker who stays in the front to save lives they need more than us. KN-95 and surgical masks are hard to found in the market so we can use clean clothes or bandana as an alternative of masks. the bandana also can help to prevent us from this disease. In light of this new evidence, CDC recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain (e.g., grocery stores and pharmacies) especially in areas of significant community-based transmission,” the statement continued.
