Since this week in class we were discussing the green team and what we can organize for our community, such as picking up trash around our local community, recycling….etc. I decided to do some research on some of the biggest organizations that are currently taking place in our world. This is article is called, “GOING GREEN: FIVE ENVIRONMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS THAT NEED YOUR HELP” It elucidates with Trump’s plan to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement back into 2017, environmental activism is more important than it’s ever been. It requires attention. The article shows one of Trump’s most infamous trends about him, his “legendary” tweets via twitter. The tweet goes back to November 6, 2012, and the tweet reads “The concept of global warming was created by and and for the Chinese in order to make the U.S. manufacturing non-competitive.” The key above the tweet explains, it’s no secret that the Trump administration is not a friend of the environment and that there are plans to cut the federal funding for climate change programs. Then the article discusses to its audience, us the listener, they need us more than ever. These organizations need us to take action and donate to these worthy causes. This article includes 5 major environmental organizations; “Environmental Defense Fund, Sierra Club, Earth justice, World Wildlife Fund, and the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation.” This article is speaking to the reader, us, and persuading us by telling us how “Trump and his administration is not paying attention to our environment. They are using actual evidence (sources) not just saying that he doesn’t care about the environment. Each of these organizations have factual explanations on what each of their missions are (logos) it’s all logical. Each organization is filled with credible scientists and people who have contributed research and studies. This is where ethos comes in, they are credible. These organizations all share the same passion, they all have drive in protecting the planet and this is where pathos takes place. This article is persuasive when it comes to explaining how it’s crucial that we need change in our environment and how these organizations can make an impact on protecting our Earth.

After our discussion in class about the green team at Crafton and how we can better recycle, I researched ways that anyone can help the environment on a daily basis. This article is titled Ten Easy Ways to Live a More Eco Friendly Lifestyle. These are just small changes that most people can make, and it benefits both our personal lives and our environment!
The first way we can better our environment is to eat less meat. According to this article, cutting back on meat consumption is a very important step in reducing the emissions of global warming gases. This would aid in reducing climate change.
Another way that we can better our environment would be to use paper less and recycle more. As the years go by, there are so many more ways to reduce our use of paper. Especially with all kinds of new technology, it should not be hard to downsize on the amount of paper especially we as students use. In my life, I find that note taking on a laptop is much faster and more effective than taking notes on paper.
One more easy way to recycle in your daily life would be to borrow instead of buying. There are so many things that we buy, such as movies, books, and expensive unnecessary items. Instead of buying these things, there is always the option of renting or borrowing some of them.
The last easy way to be more eco friendly i will share would be to reduce the use of plastic bags in stores. There are so many options and ways to do this, such as switching out to canvas bags or just reusing the plastic bags you buy. This saves not only money, but helps our environment.
I really enjoyed reading this article because it helps to show that anyone can make a difference in our environment. The choices we make daily can and will affect our personal lives and environment in the long term.

In this article, it gives us 60 whole ways to help benefit our rural community. In this article, it presents some very helpful information on how to make a small impact to the community. After our class talked about the Green Team on Monday, I realized I wasn’t really involved in the discussion as I was cramming for a midterm. I also have ideas of my own that could benefit Crafton as a whole. This pertains even to health too. The article above gives various ideas that pertain to the topics of helping people. This branches out into various situations like cleaning the environment, helping out specific neighborhoods, things relating to animals/animal shelters, helping the homeless population, helping special needs kids, and even senior homes, such as geriatrics, hospice, and nursing homes. Some of the ideas I have in my mind for benefitting people about health is offering to take blood glucose levels and offering citizens to take their blood pressure, advising citizens about the significance of their blood pressure. Something that also came into my mind other than the things discussed on Monday and what was posted was distributing helmets, importance of wearing one and also giving information about how trauma (physical trauma) does to your body in the long run. Also lecturing citizens about the importance of their diet and how important it is to wear seat belts. Also reaching out to community centers to see how to help.
I choose this article because it gives us more perspectives on how to help the community other than the ones we already listed and came up with. I also chose this article because it pertains to what we have been discussing this past week. I hope this has the ability to potentially help the green team and spark some more great ideas in heads. We have all these ideas, but it is remaining stagnant in our minds. The next step is to put it into action.

This week I decided to dig more into rhetoric and the uses of ethos, logos, and pathos. I recalled a commercial from the 2020 Superbowl that implemented ethos and pathos to persuade us as to why we may need/want the new product. It opens with Chrissy Teigen and John Legend having a “going away party” for the “old luxury” and introducing the new Genesis GV80. Chrissy shares a speech in which she talks to a variety of people, showing that the Genesis is made for everyone. She then follows up by presenting the car in a humorous way (pathos). When she calls John to bring in the car, he misses the cue, coming in late and making a silly joke. Both Chrissy and John are very commonly known celebrities that are known for being successful, which appeals to ethos. Being that Genesis is on the more luxurious side of cars, it is usually advertised to more luxurious people who often appear to be more formal in life. Through having someone quirky and who stays real with her followers such as Chrissy, she brings another group of consumers who may not have ever considered a brand as luxurious as this, which appeals to the pathos of possible consumers. All in all, the argument Genesis is making for their new GV80, is that it is for everyone, formal or informal. They end the commercial with, “somebody had to make luxury fun”, to really get the audience wanting more, because who doesn’t want to have fun?

Motivation: The Scientific Guide on How to Get and Stay Motivated is an article written by James Clear. I chose this article because many people including myself find themselves lacking motivation from time to time. This article tries to grab the reader’s attention by staying wholesome and relatable to its audience. An example of this would be, “This isn’t going to be some rah-rah, pumped-up motivational speech. (Thant’s not my style)” (Clear). I think the writer does this to make people feel like this article isn’t just a pep talk intended to fill you with temporary enthusiasm. By making the audience feel like they can relate to what they are reading then they become more likely to take what this article has to say into consideration. One direct example of how motivation is explained is “At some point, the pain of not doing it becomes greater than the pain of doing it” (Clear). I found this statement to be very accurate. People lacking motivation to do something and then waiting until the last minute to do it is a perfect example of this.
Another reason I chose this article is because it made me think of our Monday 2/24 class where no one seemed focus. I think that this article was a good refresher on the importance of staying motivated and not waiting until the last minute to do things. “Every choice has a price, but when we are motivated, it is easier to bear the inconvenience of action than the pain of remaining the same” (Clear).

In this article, it shares the stories about patients of the Shriners hospital who are less fortunate. Some of the children that are presented in the video are in a wheelchair, missing a leg, or missing an arm. While you are watching this video you began to feel bad for those children who are less fortunate. The hospital then leaves their number at the end of the commercial with the children telling the audience thank you for their donations.
In class, we reviewed rhetorical analysis; in rhetorical analysis, there are ethos, pathos, and logos. All three of these strategies are effective in making a connection to the audience. Ethos is used for credibility and tone; in this case, the commercial is credible because the commercial is about young patients who are enrolled at a hospital. Also, the children use a sorrowful tone at the beginning of their story. Then transition their tone to a thankful tone because they receive a remedy when people donate to the hospital. In addition, pathos was used throughout the whole video. Pathos was implicated while they were presenting their story because you get to see how the children have a disability. Which makes the audience feel guilty and sorrow for taking their health for advantage because they see these children who are less fortunate. Lastly, logos is used towards the end of the video. The children talk about the more donations they receive, the more help they will receive. This situation is logical because nothing comes for free. This video was chosen because it uses the strategies that are from the rhetorical analysis.

The article written by Jon Miltimore on February 27,2018 titled “Logical Fallacies in the Gun Debate” outlines the six most common fallacies that are commonly brought up when the topic of gun control is discussed. They include Non Sequitur which brings up topics that don’t follow the true argument at hand, False Dilemma/False Dichotomy which is false reports mostly brought up in news media, Appeal to pathos through people’s personal feelings, Straw man which is a argument that is easily knocked down, Bandwagon which is popular belief, and Faulty Analogy which believes that because two things are alike in some regards they are alike in others. The article begins by discussing how polarizing the topic of gun control and the Second Amendment have become in the United States in recent years. It continues by defining each of the types of fallacies and the proceeds to give a concept example of the term, followed by an example related to the argument, a historical example, and finishes off with a real world example either in the form of a tweet, video, or news clip. It also brings up the fallacy of ad hominem and how it is constantly used not only in this debate but all types. The author does a great job of avoiding bias by informing the audience without jumping in and putting in his two cents on the issue. The article was extremely beneficial to me because it was able to help reinforce my knowledge on fallacies and relate them to real world concepts. When it comes to the topic of gun control its hard to avoid fallacies as people are so passionate about the debate no matter what stance they take. The best way to avoid fallacies is to focus on facts and statistics that strengthen your claims and resist the urge to attack your opponent when your opinions differ from theirs.

Reading Summary of Volunteering
Summary:
Volunteering can be a great impact that is felt within a community. Being a volunteer can help boost your self-esteem, creating a safety net for you to experience something new. Getting out and volunteering can also help one build connections with others that they may never have had before. “Researchers at the London School of Economics found that people become happier by volunteering more” (Shin). Your physical well-being can be boosted for you to live longer with a healthy body. It may seem minor, but volunteering can help one find a sense of purpose in their lives. Last but not least, volunteering teaches you great new skills all around that can help you with situations all throughout your life.
Response:
I believe that volunteering can hugely impact your life in a positive manor. Although many may have tight schedules and do not believe that they can create time do so, if you are able to it can help you appreciate and see things through a different perspective. I also feel that volunteering can bring pure joy and happiness to ones heart. Being a part of a group that puts aside time to help the community can be nothing be good vibes and make you feel positively about yourself. I think highly of volunteering if people are capable of managing their time to get out and do good things for the community that they reside in. Overall volunteering is something I am looking to get myself into and would be amazing if everyone could also try to make time to get involved to help build better connections all around and spread more peace.

The CNN website provided a video and small article in regards to Carly Fiorina highlight the Presidents rude remarks. Specifically this is focused on President Trump using the insult “horse face” to describe adult film star Storm Daniels.
He used the fallacy ad hominem. Ad hominem is a fallacy that focuses on
Statements or remarks against the person instead of the position they are trying to maintain. Trump was accused of an affair with Stormy Daniels and he tweeted the comment, “horse face,” after the judge dismissed the defamation lawsuit against the president.instead of him addresses in the law suit issue, he ad hominem attacked on Twitter.
The ad hominem fallacy is quite fallacy to be seen practicing. I mean people directly attacking a persons character comes off as unprofessional and very defensive. It makes it diff ult to have productive conversations with human beings constantly using the ad hominem approach. It leads to issues not being resolved or addressed at all. It can make conversation very convoluted. A way to practice this in future papers and in life would be to make sure your focus is on the actual matter at hand. A way to demonstrate that is through active listening. Example, someone says , “Could you please not eat my cookies? I’m saying them for later. The other person could respond, “sure. I won’t eat them. I know you love those cookies and you’ll want to eat them later. The person affirms the statement they heard by restating it a way to know the message was receive. With an Ad hominem the person would say, “ What are you trying to say, I eat all of your food? Let me list off all the bad habits you do?”
It takes a 360 degree turn real quick. Overall to avoid Ad hominem we need to be mindful and purposeful with the words we use. Ad hominem fallacies don’t look professional, or credible or even sensible. Focusing on the material provided in papers demonstrated you know the topic and you are more concerned about the topic or issue.

In class this week we learned about Fallacies this link gives you more examples of types of fallacies. For example the first fallacy is about slipper slope – it’s a Allstate insurance commercial and Dean Winters is thrown out a truck like trash and the ran over my a car and hit by a Semi truck. Basically Saying get Allstate insurance so you covered Incase all this stuff happens to you. In reality if this happen to someone they would be dead and yes it’s good to be covered but it’s a false commercial because he’s still alive after ever hit. This company do the most to get you thinking about having there insurance. It makes you think you know it’s better to be safe than sorry if an all reality that happens and you’re still alive. At the end she has adds a low blow to State Farm saying Allstate is better than state farm “kidding”. The next commercial is about Pepsi’s and how the kids were dancing out while drinking Pepsi and then they met Michael Jackson so if you drink Pepsi all this stuff would happen that’s a false fallacy because in reality how often do we may meet some type of on celebrity and get to dance with them because of Pepsi. I never paid a attention to fallacies but now learning more about them, their everywhere.

As we talked about in class in the act of going and saving the planet a lot of people in America are trying to save the planet. Tesla is inventing new technologies that are helping to save the planet like their electric cars. They have created solar panels for your rooms but instead of noticing the bulky panel on your rooms. the roofing is the solar panels and you don’t even notice that they are solar panels. They did this so it is appealing and you are going green at the same time. Tesla is going to change the world with these technologies. Tesla started the trend of electric cars and has influenced other car companies to get into this market. Tesla is really changing the world and will continue to do so. With the increase in technology, humankind is adapting to climate change. The only way climate change is going to be fixed is if we get countries that are contributing the most to pollution like China. America is doing everything we can do like with these new go green technologies but now it is time to influence the world to save the planet. People need to stop telling Americans to do something about it when the full reality we need to be telling the people that are destroying the planet.

In the article I selected this week it gives really good ideas to what one can do for their community! It gives over 129 examples! I chose this article because after we brainstormed for Green Team it encouraged me to want to help out my community and help make it a better place! The article gives great advice as to why you should help volunteer for your community. Some good reasons the article gave to volunteering are to help your resume, meet new friends, personal growth, and can help you gain experience for certain jobs. All these and many other reasons are really encouraging ways to want to volunteer and possibly make it a habit to volunteer! The article also helps you think about who you want to help, the type of impact you want to make, and the skills you could gain from volunteering. Also look into how much time you can offer to volunteering, because you shouldn’t agree to do something then have loads of other work to do so you must always plan everything out!
I personally believe that volunteering is one of the greatest things that we can do as people for our communities. And the best thing is there is never only one option when it comes to volunteering. You can help children, your school, senior citizens, the environment, helping the hungry/homeless, etc. It makes you feel good about yourself when you can do something to help others and your community. You can really make a change for yourself and the people around you! Aside from the fact that it looks good on a resume and for college, I believe when you do things out of the kindness of your own heart, you make these great acts of kindness a habit and it makes you want to continue giving! Because seeing how you can make others happy and the environment better is also going to encourage others to volunteer themselves.

The article talks about the recent outbreak of coronavirus and how the Chinese media took advantage of the situation in order to fit the governments best interests. This type of fallacy would be considered cherry picking. The article explains how the people of China are to blame for not believing the early reports of the possibility of coronavirus. To summarize, they were not to blame because of past events that lead the Chinese people to not believe them in the first place. Before this outspread, China had been lying to the citizens and would invoke fear into the people in order to follow their agenda. In other words, China lost their credibility and as a result, when it came to reporting the coronavirus, the people discredited that notion and has lead us to where we are at today. It’s also tough to say because who knows how China would’ve handled the early diagnosis of China; maybe they could have contained it or maybe could have stopped a mass paranoia that is instilled into people all over the world today.
As spoken about in class, fallacies serve to discredit an idea or opposition. In this article, the fallacy that is used is cherry picking. Which is picking headlines and news that don’t fit their goal or agenda. During the protests, the Chinese government claimed that there were no “brutalities” going on between citizens and the police. It was a little hard to prove that when all the videos and reports showed otherwise. Due to these fallacies, it would hurt the governments reputation and lead to people not being able to trust them when the early reports of coronavirus were arising. Fallacies can result it fallouts as shown in this article. Instead of not presenting the real facts, the government chose to pick the facts that would make them look better, however in the long run, it hurt their reputation and as a result lead to a mistrust between the government and its people.

SUMMARY: This article discusses the most common logical fallacies and provides several examples for each one. Some of the fallacies it discusses are: ad hominem, argument from authority, argument from ignorance, band wagon, begging the question, dogmatism, fallacy of exclusion, failing Occam’s razor, and more. Some of these fallacies we had discussed in class, but the failing Occam’s razor fallacy I had never heard of before. Failing Occam’s Razor fallacy is “the scientific principle that the simplest of any given hypothesis is likely to be the right one”. Some of the examples provided for this fallacy included having bad experiences with dating, and concluding that because you had a couple bad experiences, the whole gender (example: men) is bad. Another example provided (that students can probably relate to) was regarding grading. The example stated that getting a bad grade on a paper written the night before the due date could lead you tp conclude that the teacher dislikes you, when in reality it was just a poorly written paper.
RESPONSE: I recognize some of the fallacies on the website as ones we discussed in class. The Failing Occam’s Razor fallacy I had not heard of before by name, but the definition of it reminds me of personal experiences. One of the examples of the fallacy was related to dating (having one bad experience with a man, and concluding that all men are evil). I can personally say I have accidentally lived by this fallacy before. Many women can relate to having many bad experiences in their dating life, and chalking it up to all men being evil. I did not know this was a fallacy until reading it today but I did disprove my own incorrect way of thinking years ago when I met my (now) husband. I realized that just because I had many bad dating experiences, it did not mean that all men had bad intentions. Now that I know there are many fallacies out there, I will be extra careful when writing my paper to ensure that my paper does not have any fallacies.

How to identify when a writer, or anyone, is putting rhetoric to use and what it is exactly is covered in Norquist, Richard’s short article, “What is Identification in Rhetoric?”. Though the topic has been covered in class, I found it useful to review an article explaining in-depth how to identify when rhetoric is in use, and what symbols to look for as our rhetorical analysis is coming shortly. Clearly, rhetoric is a form of persuasion, where a speaker persuades an audience by the use of stylistic identifications that has proven its ability to sway audiences- likely because of the audience’s inability to recognize when rhetoric is being exercised! Norquist provides examples of rhetoric devices used in essays where it isn’t so obvious they are being used, where as in class rhetoric is displayed clearly typically in short phrases.
Being able to review rhetoric in essays was good practice in preparation for the rhetorical analysis- though I likely won’t be analyzing an essay but a commercial instead, I plan to review the lines used in the chosen video in detail as I would an essay. Exercising the ability to identify rhetorical devises written in front of me will help in completing my analysis; I imagine it to be quite different when analyzing what is written in front of you, vs. the message being sent verbally. Especially in a commercial, there is far more than just the use of words when aiming to persuade, music, location, actors, lighting and videography all contribute to persuasion just as much as words. Norquist’s article gave me the idea to take note line-for-line of what emotions the author is trying to pull from the watcher as everything used and said has a meaning.

The article “Fifteen benefits of drinking water” written by James McIntosh on July 16, 2018. Goes in depth on why it is important to stay hydrated and drink water rather than consume other forms liquids other people tend to choose. This article can tie back to class due to the fallacy being presented (Logos, Pathos, and Ethos). Logos is being used to convince the reader to drink water by giving multiple examples of health risk. A big one being used is Kidney damage. Drinking water is important for the kidneys to be able to filter out waste and to function properly. Pathos is being used to inform and alert the positive effects of drinking water and the negative effects of not drinking water. Hopefully causing some to worry and to change their ways. Ethos is being used in the forms of actually providing an example of a study carried out by the CDC out of a sample of 3,397 adults on their water consumption.
This article stood out to me because it is really important to stay hydrated throughout the day. During sports, I have constantly seen other teammates or players in general collapse due to the challenges of certain climates and the lack of hydration. So put down the Dr.Pepper or Energy Drink and grab yourself a nice refreshing glass of water! Refreshing Gulp Noises

In the previous school week, we discussed the “green team” and the different ways pollution affects us and will continue to. The link attached provides many different ways that students, like us, can implement methods to help our society be more green. Minor habits in everyday life; note taking, water bottle purchasing, the air conditioning in your car, they all have negative impacts on our environment. The website mentions small alters, such as, “taking school notes on laptops and phones” but those techniques are known and practiced even more so for practicality amongst students. Some of the more majorly schemed changes were suggestions of “turning off a/c and heaters” and which would be super beneficial for global warming, if more people would actually get into the habit of this practice. The issue with global warming is not recognizing how small changes need to be made in order for actual change, it is an issue that is irreversible but it is preventable once awareness is spread. Opening a window for fresh air rather than turning the air conditioner up, would not only be cost efficient and green efficient but it would also allow in some Vitamin D which is beneficial to stressed/depressed teens and adults. In class, I had suggested a reusable water bottle that is instigated through your class instructor and would be redeemable for extra credit by the end of the course. An experiment like this would allow both parties, the “tester and tested,” to observe the changes that would result from an implemented water bottle. The changes would be cost efficient for the students and all of our environments would be bettering step by step. The environments conditions could be better but they won’t until awareness is spread and changes are made, whether your contribution is big or small, it’s there.

The article that I picked is about climate change and if it’s too late to combat or reverse the damage that we have done to our earth. To summarize this article it goes over how long it would exactly take for our earth to recover if were to stop emitting green house gases, and if were to stop emitting green house gases today global warming would continue to happen for at least several more decades if not centuries. This is due to the planet to respond, and because carbon dioxide the predominant heat-trapping gas lingers in the atmosphere for hundreds of years. There is a time lag between what we do and when we feel it. However there is two major things we can do to combat these problems and fix it the first is mitigation- which is reducing the flow of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, and the second is adaption learning how to live and adapt to the climate change that has already been set in motion.
This article shows that we have done some serious damage but it is not to late at all we can still fix what we have done. This article also pertains to class being that we have been talking about climate change and how we can help fix those problems locally at our campus and community

The article that I chose to write my journal response on this week is an article titled “How to Go Green: In the Community “posted on a website called treehugger.com. This article provides 10 ways that an average person can help their community become not only environmentally friendly but also environmentally aware. One of the more viable examples of something any average person can do is to first become more connected with their community. The article states that the only way to find out what a community needs to improve on is to get involved and connected. The active things that the article mentions people can do is stuff like purchasing local goods such as produce and thinking about the way we travel. The article really emphasizes the fact that people need t to be knowledgeable about how much travel is involved in everyone’s daily lives and the impact it has on your carbon footprint. The final point that the article makes that I find to be important is that they think significant change can be made from people if they were to become more political. They go on to say that it will probably be easier to get involved in local politics rather than national because these people you are trying to have influence on also live in your community.
The way that this correlates to class is our conversations about getting our class together to do something that will benefit the campus community. We didn’t come to a definitive conclusion but, our class did come up with several good ideas. Such as, recycling because some student had found out that the school just throws away the recycling they do get. Also, expanding the community the already existing community garden on campus. As an environmental science major I am always looking for “green” volunteer work I can do that will look good for when I transfer and these are the most appealing and personally fun sounding volunteer options as well as joining the club that was also discussed in class.

A couple of weeks ago there was this huge story that busted out about that day being the only day of the year that the gravity pull was extra strong and to show that there was a demonstration of a broom being stood up. It was magnified at the fact that, that day was going to be the only day that you could do that. The people on the internet ate that story up and every other post on my Instagram while I scrolled through my timeline was a video of a broom being stood up. I was so shocked that I even joined the gravity broom party. It wasn’t until I saw someone post on there story that the whole story was made up and that you could actually stand up your broom 365 days a year. The story started with a celebrity posting about her broom and from there, that fabricated story traveled fast. It is very easy to fall for what you read on the internet! If it wasn’t for my friend doing her research I would’ve always believed the broom story. This just reminded me of what we talked about in class how fallacies are everywhere and that it is important to back up your statements with facts or you will fool someone or they will fool you. Its incredible that we have the government, news, paper always lying to us but we re also blessed to have the tools to uncover the lies we’ve been told.

In the article “The Bandwagon Effect” it goes over the origin of the definition, how it’s used as well as uncommon uses of the term. The term bandwagon came about during political campaigns where candidates would have marching bands and parade floats. From that if you weren’t joining the festivities of that political party you were deemed as missing out. Yet in nowadays definition it is seen as joining one group since it’s what everyone else is doing and they coin the term herd mentality. Which is when a like minded crowd all think the same thing. However the article begins to use the term bandwagon in areas of life we may not have been shown too. For example the author talks about relationships and how if your group of friends have low standards for the people they date it’s most likely to play an effect on how you date your next individual
This article is very true because even today candidates can still use the bandwagon term. For example, Trump uses the “Make America Great again”. Which a select group of people find this to be the best campaign strategy and start to follow trump as well without making up their own discussions. This could really affect our society as a whole because you no longer have people thinking for themselves and instead just following what is shown. Yet we need to step back and start to question the trends or things society is deemed as popular to truly explore all that it may bring. This could apply to every aspect of your life because to stay true to who you are means to follow your own thoughts and own beliefs being sure to be secure with your own discussion. By doing this we can really start to see what is actually beneficial for us and what you can cut out of your life due to it being what the majority of people think.

I wanted to dive a little deeper on some ways to volunteer and ideas to help the GreenTeam. A good place to go to is Just serve.org. It gives you a ton of places to volunteer and the contact information for who you need get ahold of. Another big volunteer event is Redlands Helping Hands which is a huge community event that happens once a year that brings the while community together. I feel that this is a great opportunity to get behind and make Crafton a better place.

This week’s class we discussed fallacies. I chose to discuss this Direct TV Commercial ” Don’t Wake Up in a Roadside Ditch”, which would be considered A slippery slope fallacy. The commercial starts off with a relatively small first step, “When your cable company keeps you on hold, you get angry” which then quickly progresses through a chain of negative events, “ When you get angry, you blow off steam. When you blow off steam, accidents happen. When accidents happen, you get an eyepatch. When you get an eye patch, people think you’re tough. When people think you’re tough, people want to see how tough and when people want to see how tough, you end up in a roadside ditch. Don’t end up in a roadside ditch..”. In all actuality, these events probably would never occur if you had your cable company put you on hold. This is just one way this advertisement is targeting their audience to switch to their Cable company. This particular fallacy invokes a type of paranoia or fear into the audience by coming up with these crazy conclusions when in reality have no correlation with each other at all. After learning what fallacies are it makes it easier and more clear to pinpoint them in the real world, at which then you could easily avoid.

This article examines the types of fallacies Trump uses in his tweets. It pulls real life examples for the fallacies red herring, argument from omniscience/authority, circular reasoning, ad-hominem, and straw man. The article demonstrates Trump’s use of the red herring fallacy in a tweet where he claims that he doesn’t have deals with Putin, but then, instead of providing evidence to back this up, he goes completely off topic and says that Obama got away with making deals with Iran. Here he is demonstrating red herring by distracting the reader of the true problem at hand instead of facing it. Additionally, Trump uses argument from authority as he says that he “calls his own shots” and thus is always correct. He doesn’t provide any substantial evidence or proof. Instead he refers to the media as fake news and says he’s credible because he’s the one in power. Trump’s use of circular reasoning can be found in a tweet where he says that he’s bringing “big stuff” by bringing new jobs, and that these new jobs are being brought due to the “big stuff” he’s bringing. He’s basically saying x equals y because y equals x. There’s no actual support to these claims. A huge fallacy Trump uses often is ad-hominem. There’s numerous examples of him attacking the way people look, act, and present themselves. This includes a tweet of him calling Carly Fioriana’s voice annoying and headache inducing. With this, he’s not even refuting her positions or ideas, but is just attacking her. Trump also regularly deploys the fallacy of straw man; often misrepresenting or blatantly oversimplifying the actions and stance of those who oppose him. One example is a tweet he made attacking the New York Time’s as they made “dishonest” coverage of him. In this tweet he refers to an apology letter that NYT sent to their subscribers, admitting that they were dishonest. This apology letter never existed and thus is a total misrepresentation of the actual events that took place.

This 2012 direct tv commercial is an example of a slippery slope fallacy. They argue that you will end up in roadside ditch if you don’t switch to direct tv. The commercial starts by getting mad at your cable company for being placed on hold which leads to you blowing off steam by playing Racquetball and getting hit in the eye. After the accident you will get an eye patch from the doctor and people will want to fight you for looking tough. In conclusion if people fight you, you will end up in a roadside ditch. But these are all made up assumptions because not every accident will cause you to get an eye patch nor do people fight people who look tough especially since patches don’t represent toughness to everyone. Also fighting won’t always land you in a ditch if you win the fight. There is no reason to assume that you will end up beat up in a roadside ditch just because you got placed on hold by your cable company. Therefore people should not accept the argument that we can end up in a ditch just because we didn’t switch from cable to direct tv.

LGB right is a topic that has attracted much controversy for a long time and still does so to this day. However, society has begun to accept the LGB community as of late. We have seen homosexuality being portrayed more prominently in mainstream media and even songs that tackle the subject of LGBT. One such song is “Same Love”, which was written by hip-hop artist Macklemore. This song was greatly praised when it was released in 2012, as it was the first recent song by a mainstream artist that supported gay and lesbian rights. The song begins with Macklemore talking about how he thought he was gay when he was a child, due to the stereotypes he used to hear. He then goes on to say that many people believe that being homosexual is a decision and that it can be fixed with religion. He also mentions how the word “gay” has become somewhat of an insult, and how it’s commonly used on the internet. He goes on to compare this with racism, religious conflicts, and sexism. He finishes off the song by saying that we should accept everyone for who they are because love is always the same. Many homosexual supporters have always had trouble finding effective ways to talk about their beliefs. However, Macklemore managed to do just that. “Same Love” topped charts internationally, has sold millions of copies, and has won numerous awards, which means that not only have a large number of people heard this song, but it’s also loved by an equal amount. The fact that this song has been so successful shows that society has, in fact, become more tolerant towards the LGB community, and this improvement in behavior towards the homosexual population will only continue to improve.
