Hidden Emotions and Alcoholics: The Mysterious Man and Woman

It’ astonishing how powerful the meanings are behind an anecdote.  In “There Was a Man, There Was a Woman” it conveys a connection between depression and the occasional indulgence of alcohol. Cisneros writes this story in a passionate manner allowing the readers to relate personally. The characters depicted are kept a mystery, Cisneros uses little detail about the pair but describes them in a way that the reader may find individualism between them. “Every payday, every other Friday, the man went to the to the Friendly Spot Bar to drink and spend his money” (Cisneros Pg. 133). The woman also attends the Friendly Spot Bar, but she is paid on opposite Fridays, therefore they don’t meet each other. Every other Friday the man and the woman drink, they are looking forward to a good time and for something great to happen.  “Every Friday in between the woman drank her beer and laughed loudly” (Cisneros Pg. 133).  Nothing great ever happens in this story, Cisneros leaves her readers guessing on what her intentions are regarding this vague but interesting story.

It is obvious that the man and woman are quite depressed, they go on with their day repeating what they do regularly, never exactly altering their actions. “The man and woman drank and drank with their friends and believed if they drank and drank, the words for what they were feeling would slip out more readily, but usually they simply drank and said nothing (Cisneros pg.133). Their daily routine is consistent and without a doubt their actions prove they are shy, nervous, and depressed. The emotions that are created amongst the readers are that of pity and sympathy for the man and woman. What’s troubling is that they never seem to change their routine, everyone in life has a choice. Drinking can help certain people relax and feel a sense of calm after a long day, but for these two individuals it seems to have a negative effect. Although the text doesn’t say much it could be a possibility that they could be heavy drinkers and heavy drinking can result in underlining health issues. “People who are not physically healthy are at an increased risk for developing mental conditions such as depression” (Nemade, Rashmi, and Kathryn Patricelli. “Lifestyle Factors and Environmental Causes of Depression.” Depression: Depression & Related Conditions, Web. Accessed 20 July 2017). In the medical field, I’ve noticed that an unhealthy lifestyle is one of the leading causes for depression, and this is possibly the case with the man and woman. Depression affects men and women differently, although they do have some similarities.

Its seems as the man and woman were depressed and relied on alcohol in their prior life which resulted into drinking every Friday on their payday. A study has been proven that drinking often results in worsening depression. “It’s also true that many people who drink too much are actually depressed, drinking to try to lift the depression” (“Alcohol Worsens Depression; Depression Worsens Alcohol Abuse.” AFMC.Org NP, 12 July 2016. Web. 20 July 2017).  This may be reasoning to why they man and woman drink too much. Many drinkers also go beyond and above the alcohol limit and express repressed hidden emotions in an unorthodox manner. Unfortunately, both the man and woman contribute to this by drinking and deprive someone of their true emotions. Alcohol can alter an individual’s thought process and emotions resulting in a loss of self. Facts from helpguide.org show that there is a true problem at some point or another within a specific circumstance. “Need to drink in order to relax or feel better” (Robinson, Lawrence, et al. “Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse.” Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse: Recognizing the Signs and Symptoms of a Drinking Problem, Apr. 2017). It’s a possibility that the man and the woman are doing this. Realistically they are considered alcoholics if they drink every Friday of their payday. Therefore, the man and woman drink heavily to hide their emotions.

Not once are their names mentioned, in addition nor is there family history. It may be that Cisneros kept the man and woman’s personal info, and their lives private due to how extensive it might have been. Harboring a sense of simplicity within her verse was crucial to her. There’s also the feeling of melancholy regarding the fact that they unknowingly, are a perfect match for each other. It’s heartbreaking, grasping the idea that they go through the same process in their daily lives, never getting the chance to meet. Throughout life, growing up with family morals truly makes you the person you are in the future of life. It would be difficult to discover the feelings that they lack for them to reach a feeling of utter content. That’s why this anecdote makes the reader question their motives. Almost nothing is known about the man and the woman but enough information is given to show that fate should be instilled upon them. The man and woman drink every other Friday, do they do it for relaxation? Or do they hope to meet a possible significant other? Most young people go to bars to unwind from the busy week, and in its possible that in some cases they meet someone of interest. Regardless, the man and woman significantly do live sad lives, and it appears as they will never reach that’s sense of fulfillment. Cisneros must have great reasoning to why nothing is mentioned such as age, weight, where they live, and why they stick with the same dull and daily routine.

It’s possible that the man and woman may have been couple in the past and were truly in love with each other. It all comes down to their past lives, did they know one another? If the man and woman were together and broke up, it may have ended on bad terms. Now, if that were indeed the case it could makes perfect sense. Everything they did was on opposite days, which may have been done purposely to avoid each other. Possibly, before the break up, the man and woman attended the same bar every Friday together with the same friends. Now they don’t talk anymore, and that is the reason why every they choose to go the bar on opposite Fridays with their own separate friends. Of course, that’s just a hypothesis, and a reason of why Cisneros may have written this anecdote. Is the overall story’s meaning to get the readers curiosity going or to maintain this as a mystery? Who knows, not much information is ever given about this man and woman who drink with friends and never meet each other. In conclusion, may be possible that Cisneros wrote this about a couple she once knew, or even her own personal experience. Or it could even be that she fabricated this story so that individuals can relate on a personal level and create their own meanings behind it.
