Do you believe a good education is important? What if I told you that video games have a special quality about them that will increase your capability to advance. With proper monitoring and guidance it can be taught safely in schools. We live in a time of age where technology is dominant in our society. Growing up back in the 80’s, 90’s, or even the early 2000’s we didn’t have a lot of the luxuries that we have today. For instance the way we communicate with each other, social media, Information, entertainment and so on. With technological advancements we may ask ourselves how it will affect our future generations with them being given such technology to not only make life easier, but how it will impact their education. There is lots of talk when it comes to video games when a child’s education is included on how his academic testing and learning is coming along. Are video games the cause for kids doing bad in school or are they actually helpful in developing a child’s learning skills?
“When the sword is once drawn, the passions of men observe no bounds of moderation.”-Alexander Hamilton. Video gaming is a very addictive entertainment and when something is fun it can become addictive. What is considered an addiction? While most people associate addiction with substances, such as drugs or alcohol, doctors recognize addictive behaviors as well. The person can need more and more of a substance or behavior to keep him going which can result in a child or adult. Numerous amount of hours playing video games can result in negative side effects. If the person does not get more of the substance or behavior, he becomes irritable and miserable. Which is a form of dependence such as a drug. This can greatly influence a person not only physically but also psychologically. Bakker says “Children who play four to five hours per day have no time for socializing, doing homework, or playing sports.” This can greatly affect a child’s education because the addiction causes them to want to play Xbox,Playstation, or PC gaming over maybe studying for the exam tomorrow. As well as later in life due to not being properly treated. “Video gaming addicts are typically males, under age 30 and often children with poor self-esteem and social problems, according to specialists. They are intelligent and imaginative but don’t have many friends at school.”(Video game addiction)
Video gaming can bring a positive outcome on your mental abilities. Studies have been shown that children who play video games have an improved visual contrast sensitivity the ability to distinguish subtle differences in shades of gray. A sign of improvement in attention and vigilance is also noticeable. In 2014 study published in Molecular Psychiatry by researchers from the Max Planck Institute in Germany from the found that playing Super Mario 64 could cause an increase in the size of brain regions. The 24 participants had to play the game for 30 minutes a day for two months under an MRI machine. They found that they had increased grey matter in the right hippocampus, right prefrontal cortex, and the cerebellum, compared to the control group that didn’t play any game.”This proves that specific brain regions can be trained by means of video games”. (Scientific benefits) On improved spatial attention “Green & Bavelier (2012) found that action video gaming improved performance on the ability to locate, quickly, a target stimulus in a field of distractors–a test that has been found to be a good predictor of driving ability.”(Cognitive Benefits). Video gaming introduces situations that are always changing and helps with problem solving in real time. Playing a first person shooter online can go many ways in which strategy and skill plays a big role in the outcome of the match and children adapt to the environment resulting in heightening one’s senses and reaction time. Video game can even help children with a learning disability such as Dyslexia. One study showed that as few as 12 hours of video game play improved dyslexic children’s scores on tests of reading and phonology (Franceschini et al, 2013).(Learning Freely)
Do children who play more video games tend to be more violent in school? “Indeed, many studies seem to indicate that violent video games may be related to aggressive behavior (such as Anderson & Dill, 2000; Gentile, Lynch & Walsh, 2004). However, the evidence is not consistent and this issue is far from settled.”(Science Direct). Sometimes what we are told is not exactly true and is said due to an idea or belief that an individual based on their assumption. I myself play video games but I can say for myself I do not act irrational and am not violent. A child with a violent nature usually tends to be a psychological problem but video gaming can still bring out an aggression in a child due to the act of violence is done repeatedly. Video games let the child be in total control of the violence and experiences the violence in his own eyes (killings, kicking, stabbing and shooting) as he continues on through the campaign(Story Mode). “The American Psychological Association (APA) also concluded that there is a “consistent correlation” between violent game use and aggression, but finds insufficient evidence to link violent video play to criminal violence.”(Raise Smart) So a correlation has been made on aggression but does not lead to a child being a delinquent in a school environment and can function in a school system.
In conclusion video gaming can be very beneficial to a developing mind. Not only physically but mentally. Physically like Amblyopia (also called “lazy eye”)(Cognitive benefits) is a disorder arising from early childhood in which one eye becomes essentially non-functional. Li and colleagues (2011) performed experiments in which some adults with this disorder played action video games using only the bad eye (the good eye was covered). “Many in the gaming condition developed 20/20 vision or better in the previously “lazy eye,” and visual attention and stereoscopic vision (ability to coordinate input from the two eyes to see depth) were restored to normal.” Not only does it reverse mental decline but also Increased mental flexibility. “A number of researchers have shown that experience with action video games improve people’s abilities to switch rapidly and without error between tasks that have conflicting demands ((Anderson et al, 2010; Green et al, 2012; Colzato et al, 2014)”(Cognitive Benefits) .Moderation is still a concern but being properly introduced at a younger age can prevent a lot of the issues we see in the world (Money,Sugar, Power, and Etc). The skills and improvements that can be produced are more beneficial than outlawing them. Although there are negative effects to gaming, the pros vastly outweigh the cons in this situation. Violence and selfishness is a human trait and can be controlled with proper practice. As well as with addiction can be cured with treatment. Given the info I have researched should be more than proof that we should incorporate video gaming into the education system to not only make learning a fun experience and a familiar one but helpful way to improve overall scores across the U.S.
