A video went up on YouTube of a grown man throwing a nine year old boy to the ground. Obviously, it got popular and people began to talk. Allegedly, the boy was damaging vehicles parked in a car park when the man confronted him and told him to stop. The man tells the kid to “get out of here” and tries to walk away. The child repeatedly tries to block him, going “chest to chest” with the man in defiance. The kid starts yelling at him and the man decides to call his sister on the phone to help. The kid continues to block and push the man who’s desperately trying to just get around him without causing a scene. The man warns the kid, saying “If you touch me one more time, I am going to grab you and move you out of the way.” The boy responds with “I don’t care.” “Get out of my way kid.” The man says as \he tries to leave once more. This time the boy starts shoving and punching the man repeatedly. Finally, the man snaps, grabs the boy by throat, and pushes him onto the ground. The boy starts wailing and screaming while on looking children start crying child abuse. Turns out, the man’s name was Sean and he was in charge of the park. After weeping, the boy starts screaming obscenities at Sean. The crowd scolds the boy for his language and attitude, he then starts yelling at everyone else and walks off. There’s been some controversy about this video. Personally, I love this video. The man put up with a lot before reacting, but was his reaction justified? He could’ve punched the kid, but he didn’t. I personally feel like a shove was appropriate given that the child was actually trying to hit him. This kid has zero respect for others and deserves way worse than getting pushed to the ground. I don’t, however, know what his home life is like and that should always be considered when judging the actions of young children. Some kids are just bad seeds though.
As an added bonus, here’s a song that I like that is very relevant to this topic. I may even do a future paper on it.

Because in class we have been discussing a lot on the tactics and strategies of ethos, logos, and pathos in advertising and in the media, I have chosen an advertisement that I always stumble across. In this ad, it’s basically stating the wonderful features of their “awesome” LG phone! It presents to you the wonderful features including the HD picture that detects what you’re taking a picture of, the amazing voice commands such as far field, and the amazing quality of the speakers! I feel that I have chosen this ad to further analyze it and how the use of ethos, logos, and pathos is played. The advertisers have built their credibility and ethos with putting a KPOP international hit star named “BTS” in their ad. BTS is a very popular group artist in America currently and have a huge fan base. The advertisers know if they put someone like this, their huge fanbase will buy this product because it has something to do with their favorite group, just how we have discussed the burger and the girl in Carls Junior ad. This ad also I feel appeals to emotion because seeing your favorite artists can appeal to their emotions and have them more engaged. It also uses pathos because when seeing the amazing features of the phone visually, it can spark emotions such as “wow that’s actually really cool!”. I feel this is a great example that correlates with what we have been talking about in class and the forms of advertisement. I feel their claim is to invest in buying their new awesome phone and when seeing this, it makes me want to buy it. They have done this by how they appealed to ethos, logos, and pathos!

This article from BBC News informs us of the tragedy of 12 boys and their coach gone missing in a cave in Thailand during the rainy season. The rainy season makes it much more dangerous because of how the caves are flooding. According to officials, four of the boys have already been freed at the time of the article’s publish. Rescuers are attempting to free the rest of them by leading them out of the cave through the rising water while water is continuously pumped out of the cave by those outside. At first, officials believed that the boys would have to wait until the rainy season ended or find an alternative method to extract the boys. This article uses much ethos, pathos, and logos to draw in viewers even though this is a real life crisis. The author uses many opinions drawn from the officials and experts on the subject to show the readers their credibility on the subject. The author of the article also displays facts as well as the plan to extract the boys and what equipment will be needed where. This helps the reader get an idea of how it works and encourages the readers to cheer on the rescuers. This can be attributed to the author’s use of logos to help not only the author’s influence, but to inform the people reading this article. The author uses short quotes from people related to the incident, such as one of the boy’s mother stating, “I am dying to see him. I miss my son.” The use of quotes like this appeal to the emotional side of people and make a larger impact to the audience by tugging on the heart strings. It is more impacting to give a single person’s tragic account rather than to sum it up by saying 12 kids and stuck in a cave. Even news article conveying an important message need to use the strategies of ethos, pathos, and logos to get their article out there and inform the people.

This week I chose a source of media called Massive Protest Against Gun Violence Closes Chicago Highway. This video depicts thousands of protesters on the Dan Ryan Expressway, shutting all five northbound lanes down. The protesters were outraged at the amount of violence happening in their city in such a short period of time. There was about 252 homicides and 1,100 shootings in the first six months of this year. These activists want stricter gun laws because of the dilemma. The topic of making more strict gun laws his very controversial and heated in todays society. There is no doubt that this topic includes a lot of bias and pathos. People who want stricter gun laws will use pathos to influence people in their position by telling of sad sob stories involving guns. Just as stated in the article, they told the audience of all the shootings and violent outbursts of people with guns and the effects that happened because of it. However, they did not mention the rest of the cause of death rates for Chicago. They simply pinned all the problems on guns because that is what the society wants to change. They do not think about other deadly weapons such as cars, that we drive everyday. Moreover, America is famous for blaming everyone else for their problems. I do not agree with the article to enforce stricter gun laws because that is not the reason our society is so distressed and unconnected. I believe people always try to find an easy answer to blame whatever problems that arise on anyone else including the murder and suicide rates in our country. Furthermore, I believe that the protesters were brave for standing up for what they believe in and trying to make a change, but need to have a better balance of ethos, pathos, and logos for most people to really be affected.

In today’s political waves, the biggest controversy is the issue of immigration, which the word itself has the power to enrage and divide. The article establishes background on the issue being, what is ICE? What exactly are they hired for? What are they assumed to be? Why are democrats preaching to abolish ICE as a solution to a peaceful world? For months ago, ICE was not a demanding uproar for political parties, yet now it is a known term that is used to characterize political parties. But because of detailed scenes of children in fear and heartbroken due to separation, now the incidents are each analyzed as cruel and uncalled for. If you’re a Republican supporting the control on immigration, those are categorized as ‘heartless’ with no empathy for the children being separated from their families due to citizenship status. Democrats are assumed to support not protecting U.S. borders. ICE only enforces immigration laws inside the U.S., nothing with patrolling the border. The debate still stands, should we abolish ICE?
The article establishes the pathos appeal to demonstrate why people favor the abolish ICE approach due to the emotional appeal of showing dozens of children, eyes pouring out as they are carried away from their parents and set to live in facilities. The videos or images touched hearts, causing debates and riots to abolish the system behind this: ICE. Videos and images evoke empathy and sorrow for those who are in conflict which can influence those to have a desire to help. The logic behind this is determining whether abolishing ICE will provide the satisfaction desired to stop the immigration issue. ICE is responsible for detaining those in U.S. but not those who are trespassing the borders currently. Therefore, is abolishing ICE the simple solution to the chaos and madness floating around? Too many factors centralize around immigration, but we are a divided nation among the issue.

I chose to write about a group of photos released by a gentleman who has made multiple trips to North Korea and smuggled back photos of daily life and the reality of their country. While I agree that the photos are interesting and that North Korea is a messed up country, I feel that the way they describe the photos is a tad over dramatic, nevertheless, they show a far different picture of life than what North Korea would have the rest of the world believe. In the photos a variety people are shown in everyday situations depicting what life is really like in North Korea.
I found this extremely interesting and the perfect example of how media depicts a false representation of reality. My favorites are the ones depicting soldiers. Were they firing nukes? Marching in war parades? Killing people? Nope. They were fixing fences, pushing buses out of ditches, and smoking. This is exactly what North Korea doesn’t want you to see. They don’t want you to know that there human. They want you to believe that they have an army of super human killing machines who are beyond loyal to the government. The reality is that these are people just like you and me. There are photos of them taking naps, smoking cigarettes while talking with their friends and standing in line. It is interesting to read the photographers notes on the reasons why he was told to delete the photos as well. He couldn’t photograph poor people, rich people, or soldiers at rest. All these would show the world that North Korea was not perfect and that they have problems like the rest of the world. This is the perfect example of how propaganda is used to present a false image of reality.

Yesterday, Mitch McConnel a senator and his two companions were pursued by local protesters after his stance at Bristol Bar & Grille. The anger was about the immigration policy that keeps families apart. The protest was not something prepared, but a quick decision to gather people with a twitter post and demonstrate the discomfort with his job. The senator did not face the crowd, he quietly left.
The situation narrated in the article has some fallacies. One is ad hominem when a protester said “No comfort for fascists” is attacking the credibility of the senator to make him look like the bad guy on camera with no facts at hand, only the assumption that the viewers understand why McConnel is a fascist. It seems that the hatred comes from the senator supporting the detention of immigrant families, however, the article notes that Mitch was against separating the children from their families. Still, protesters shouted, “ Where are the babies, Mitch?” I think this can be a non sequitur since it does not seem to follow the fact that the senator is opposed to that policy. Also, someone described him as a “turtle head!” and there is even a post that visually describes it. Claiming that he only hides from backlash but as funny as the comparison can be, there are still two things that should not be compared; man, and turtle (Faulty analogy). The protesters were only shouting at him not trying to talk to him. Lastly, the comment, “We know where you live, too, Mitch! We know where you live! Yeah! We know where you live, Mitch!” This can be interpreted in many ways, one is as a scare tactic to the senator’s safety or a link to the ‘peaceful’ protests that normally occur outside the house of the senator.

On July 4th, a man by the name of Adam Bloom was accused of racial profiling. Bloom, the pool chairman with the Glenridge Homeowners Association, saw Jasmine Edwards and asked for her I.D. Apparently there were other people around, but Edwards claimed the Bloom singled her out. Edwards stated that she did not have an I.D. instead provided her address and a pool key cards. Bloom is not satisfied and one again asked to see a valid form of I.D. The authorities are then called to settle the dispute and they ask Edwards to validate that the key card does work. Once she proves the keycard works she demands Bloom apologizes. Bloom ignores her. According to the article, Bloom believed that Jasmine Edwards was “not wealthy enough live in the area”.
The article states that Bloom assumes that Edwards is “not wealthy enough to live in the area”. This is a loaded statement and a very hasty generalization. Edwards believes that Bloom assumes that all black people are poor. The video provided did not include any evidence of this. There was no evidence suggesting that Bloom had any racist behavior towards her. Bloom was actually acting on a report saying that ‘this person (Edwards) doesn’t appear to be a pool member”. On the other hand, Bloom could have handed the situation differently. Once proven that Edwards was indeed a resident, Bloom should have apologized immediately. Perhaps he would have not lost his job and his reputation would not be hurt.

On July 7th a massive group of protesters grouped up and shut down another freeway in Chicago in demand of “national common-sense gun laws” more public resources, jobs, with better schools, and economic development. During this rally, demonstrators gained access to interstate 94 after a small confrontation with the police. The “deal” was to only close down two lanes allowing traffic to be able to continue, however it ended up with the entire northbound side of the freeway being shut down by the protesters. I feel that I only have a small understanding of why people believe shutting down a freeway will bring the change that they want or promote the problem they face. I feel that they do this to show society what it’s like to have your daily lives halted by something completely unfair and out of their control by people who believe differently or are willing to do something illegal to raise awareness of a problem. However, I do not think that this will change anything but those who were unfortunate to be caught in the traffic. Honestly when I first saw that another protest has shut down another freeway I was not surprised. Once I saw that they were demanding more than just gun control it made me think who are they trying to reach and how would they go about with the changes that they are demanding? Are they actually trying to give possible solutions during these rallies or are they just making demands of change? This is honestly one thing id to see for myself, so I can get that kind of experience of both watching these people stop traffic and get a better understanding on why they are doing it and how they’d make our modern-day society change.

My journal this week is in response to the following article: a JetBlue flight attendant saving the life of a French bulldog. According to this article, there was a French Bulldog on a JetBlue flight from Florida to Massachusetts, when she started showing signs that she was in distress. Once exhibiting severe symptoms of oxygen deprivation, a flight attendant thought quickly to save the dog’s life. The attendant grabbed an oxygen mask, and held it over the dog’s face until the symptoms went away and the dog began breathing normally. Thanks to this flight attendant’s quick thinking, this dog lived- and that is what makes this article so enjoyable. I chose this article mainly because we could use some uplifting and happy news, but also because I related it to the media censorship we addressed in class. The example given in class has been the terrible images of police brutality versus the image of the police officer petting a kitten. I relate this to this article given the recent negative news stories about flight attendants and airlines. We see stories about airlines kicking people off flights for their clothing choices, violently dragging people out of their seats, and derogatory comments being made from employees. This article is a stark contrast to previously broadcasted stories, and I found it thoroughly uplifting and enjoyable. It’s important to see both sides of an argument, but I definitely prefer to see the good side. https://www.google.com/amp/www.foxnews.com/travel/2018/07/08/jetblue-crew-saves-french-bulldog-with-oxygen-mask-during-flight.amp.html

https://www.eater.com/2018/7/6/17539958/red-hen-reopens-protests-lexington-vaThe Red Hen restaurant in Lexington, Va., has been reopening on the afternoon of the 5th after nearly two weeks of suspension. Although a group of people gathered outside the door to protest, they could not stop the diners. support.
The restaurant refused to be the White House press secretary Sarah. Saunders served and asked her to leave, thus drawing national attention. The Virginia news Eater reported that on June 22nd, Stephanie Wilkinson, one of the owners of “Red Hen” restaurant. told Sanders that the restaurant adheres to “some standards,” such as “Honesty, Compassion, and Cooperation.” The report said that she alleged that the Trump administration was “inhuman and immoral.”
After the news came out, Trump’s supporters flocked to the restaurant to protest, hoping to convey the message of “respecting the President of the United States”.
However, the protesters and national concerns did not seem to prevent the diners from returning; the report said that on the day of the reopening of the “Red Hen”, a notice was posted on the window indicating that the seats were fully booked.
Some people expressed support for the case of Wilkinson’s decree.
From my opinion I think the restaurant owner is very brave in doing this, although her approach is somewhat extreme, because Sarah does not enter the restaurant as a politician, but requests meals as a guest, cannot refuse a guest’s normal request because of your personal political opinion, unless you give a notice in advance at the door.

In the article, the author speaks on the Florida rapper, Jahseh Onfroy, AKA XXXtentacion, who was gunned down on June 18th in Broward County, Florida. They go on to speak about the allegations against the 20 year old and questions the reader as to whether the fans should feel guilty about his supporting his music because of them. The writer includes various verses that are taken out of context and claim that it his music is an anthem for the “depressed and suicidal youth”.
The article attempts to persuade the reader to think twice before supporting Jahseh’s art by using Logos and Pathos. The use of Logos is apparent when the rapper is compared to R.Kelly, an R&B singer with a huge amount of scandals and allegations against him. It causes the reader to question their logic and ask “Why would I support Jahseh if he is compared to someone like that?” The title, “Should Fans Feel Guilty About Listening to Alleged Abusers Like XXXTentacion?”, is using pathos because it plays on the morals of the reader. No one wants to support an abuser because justice needs to be served and good over evil. These are all allegations. He was not found guilty by a judge so why jump to conclusions to defame another young man? Like another reader had commented, in the US, someone is innocent until proven guilty. Personally, i do not agree with this article and feel that there is a huge bias. There is no one mention of the positive changes the he was undergoing or the charity events he held for his city. As a people, a sense of loss should be felt because a young man was viciously murdered.

Americans are heating up the moon!
From 1971 to 1977, the Apollo program transmitted raw data on the temperature of the moon’s surface from the probes that the astronauts installed on their trip there. The data was recorded on magnetic tapes and sent to NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston.
The temperature data from 1975 to 1977 was somehow lost for a long time but the puzzle pieces were recently reconnected and properly observed. The surface of the moon rose in temperature by 1.8 degrees to 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit around the installed probes. This is because back when our astronauts landed on the moon, their footprints and rover tracks disrupted the surface of the moon. These spots lowered the moons albedo, which is its ability to reflect the suns light away from its surface and back into space. This caused the moon to absorb the sunlight and its temperature has been rising around the spots that were observed by the space travelers.
The lesson that was learn from this article is that sometimes when you want to learn about certain things or try to improve them, you can cause more harm than good to the situation if you don’t have a solid plan of approach.

The banners read various apologies for how other Christians have condemned and cast out LGBTQ members. What I think is so special about this moment is this church taking the initiative to correct the fallacies that other church’s have created. As mentioned in the article, many Christians for years have used interpretation of scripture to hate members of the LGBTQ community. The inaccuracy of this action compared to the Bible teaching us of our God of love has sent Christian groups to protest queer events. At the end of the day Jesus was kind to criminals, the ill, prostitutes, and even the people who betrayed him and that is the way of life Christians should strive to live by.

In this week journal, I am writing about the border control in Falfurrias, Texas. The illegal immigrant has been one of the most controversial topics in the last few months. This article discusses what border patrols see at first hand working there. It went into details of the border patrols have to go through and find migrants and it shows pictures of migrants hiding. “Nearly 30,000 vehicles pass through Falfurrias, and more undocumented migrants are found there than any checkpoint in the country,” said Rene Quintanilla, a supervisory agent at the Rip Grande Valley headquarters. Even with a river in Rio Grande Valley, a checkpoint in Falfurrias, and steel fence, human smugglers try’s every way to bring immigrants over. Human smugglers have great sources to try to bring immigrants over the border. Smugglers will rent houses or mobile home, tinted window, hide migrants in car departments, 18-wheelers with hundreds of migrants hiding in loads of cargo. Transporting undocumented migrants is a federal crime, and the fine is a few hundred dollars to more than $1,000 per migrant and some might even be sentenced to eight months in prison.
I am wow by some of the pictures of migrants hiding in cars and how crazy migrants will do to cross over the border. How are they able to fit into the car compartment? It just blows my mind. Border Patrol has more duty than just let cars past the border control, they have to search for humans and what they discover is crazy. The article post pictures along with the article, brings up questions, from both sides of the stories. I question myself, is this why the zero tolerance is enforced? There are hundreds of migrants flooding into the United States. I agree that there should be some control of the immigration but do not separate the family with children.

The video I have chosen is a response to President Trump’s wall by the former president of Mexico, Vicente Fox. Along with making fun of the United State and President Trump, he clearly claims that Mexico will not pay for the border wall. He says that the idea of putting up a wall is useless and a waste of money. He makes fun of the wall by pointing out flaws in it that can be easily taken advantage of. For example when he say, “Your going to build a 25 billion dollar wall that can be beat by a 25 dollar ladder.” He says the wall is racist and will not keep anyone out who wants to cross the border but fails to mention that Mexico has a massive southern border wall. He then goes on to say what could be better done with the 25 billion dollars instead of building a wall. He starts naming off stats like supplying the world with clean drinking water for three years, end world hunger for one year or hire 50,00 teachers for 10 years, but give no support to these claims. I don’t think this video was meant to actually persuade people to be against the wall. I think it was meant to be funny and insulting to the idea of President Trump and the wall , but either way I don’t really agree with it. It didn’t help that the whole time Fox was making pointless insults and then giving fact less alternatives . He called something that is meant for the security of our nation racist when his country has done exactly what we are trying to do now. He also sounded like he was encouraging immigrants to break our laws and come over illegally.

Headphones are a smart idea when you listen to your own tones with no interruptions towards other people, right? The issue and topic being argued in “The Argument Against Headphones” is that recent studies are showing that earbuds/headphones are causing an increase in hearing loss. The intended audience is mainly towards teenagers but also anyone who uses headphones at a high volume. Whether it being at the gym, in class, in the car, etc, headphones are placed right next to the eardrum. The author used evidence from a study published August in The Journal of the American Medical Association, history of headphones and which they were originally used for and the transformation through generations, and multiple proven statistics. I personally believe the author was successful in presenting their argument and considers their intended audience. The author was able to show proof (ethos & logos) by using research and statistics. In one sentence it states that people who listen to sound in their headphones for more than an hour a day risk permanent hearing loss after five years. When I read that sentence, I now want to be aware of the volume in my headphones (pathos). I agree with author on how the use of headphones increase hearing loss but I feel like the author could have done more to support her argument. I also question to myself ‘what are ways we can prevent hearing loss and still be able to use headphones”.

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/immigration/new-trump-admin-order-separated-parents-leave-u-s-kids-n888631
The article I chose, titled “New Trump admin order for separated parents, leave U.S. with kids or without them,” talks about migrant parents being prevented from asking for asylum. Under the zero tolerance, parents are now being forced to chose between asylum or leaving with or without their children. A court in Washington ordered for over 2,000 migrant children to be reunited with their parents, but the trump administration has given those parents two options. Either leave the country with your children or leave the country without them. This does not allow parents under the zero tolerance policy to reunite with their children while they wait a decision from a judge for asylum. Migrants who have already passed asylum are even being presented with the form. This connects to our class by showing pathos, the trump admin is only giving these parents the option to leave. But to leave either with or without their children, this is a harsh way to force people out of the country. I don’t agree with this, separating families shouldn’t be a way to scare people out of migrating into the country. They are arguing that if they force people to chose between leaving with or without their kids, it will scare people from coming into the country. I think it also is trying to make the people already here chose between being here or being with their family.

Here in this comic I’ve chosen, your eye is drawn to the painting of colorful flours on a almost blank canvas, underneath the floors it says Affirmative Action. The painter dressed up in Americas red, white, and blue he has a surprised look on his face when looking over his shoulder. It seems to hit that he’s almost done. Then second you notice in the conversation bubble we read, “I’ve reversed the policy. Put all the colors back in there separate tubes.” said by the cartoon Donald Trump. Down in the lower right corner there is a little day at a drawing table assumed to be the artist of cartoon making a statement saying, “Separate, but equal tubes?”.
In the comic I think the artist is poking fun saying that President Trump might try to change the Affirmative Action. As far as I know he hasn’t yet, but I’m sure lots of groups are out there scared that President Trump is going to try to make us, “go back in time” to when people weren’t able to have the privileges that they do now. People talk about how he wants women to stay home and be house wives or maybe that he hates women and other groups that aren’t white rich men. So the different colors are for different races and genders to be put back into their rolls or paint tubes.

Children who are at-risk fall under 5% in a large population of children and unfortunately are the children you keep a closer eye on for their safety and for others. “The term at-risk is often used to describe students or groups of students who are considered to have a higher probability of failing academically or dropping out of school (https://www.edglossary.org/at-risk/).” Working with children you run into kids who wish not to their homework but in one way or other you can get them to do it. There are kids who refuse and no matter what techniques you may use they will not do it. At-risk children tend to be the kids who are out of reach to help. Some give up and other do not. The San Bernardino police department took a few at-risk children from the San Bernardino school district on a camping trip in Big Bear. The hope of the trip was so the children may look at police officers differently show them discipline. For example if the kids were heard say a swear word then they would do push-ups. (Not all kids, especially teenage boys would look at that as a discipline.)
Living in San Bernardino both the police department and school district do not have a good reputation. The police department is understaffed and police in general are facing how social media showcase them as the bad guys abusing their power. The San Bernardino school district has seen low test scores and violence within the schools due to low income neighbors that may have gang violence.
For both the police department and school district of San Bernardino to work together can change the view many have on the city as a whole. Yet will it change the lives of the kids or the problems of the city. Camping trip is a great way to show the kids that police officers are good guys who like going up to Big Bear but as a police officers they have duties when returning to work. And the kids are still going back to their neighbors and homes that may be causing them to be “at-risk”. It’s a small step but it’s a step at the least. San Bernardino will need a lot of help for that city to thrive. Not just the police department and school but the homes, streets and residents.
