What I chose to read and write about is climate change, since it is one of the things we discuss in class I wanted to look up an article about it. The LA Times discusses when us humans actually started to notice the change in our world; stating that a “Swedish scientist first calculated in 1896 that adding carbon dioxide to the atmosphere could lead to warmer global temperatures. By the 1930’s scientists were measuring the increase, and in the late 1960’s they had documented the impact of melting ice in Antarctica. By 1977, Exxon-Mobil had recognized its own role in the warming of the ocean, the polar ice melt and the rising sea level.” Even though Exxon-Mobil knew their point of what they were doing to the world they launched a massive public disinformation campaign to muddy the science and downplay the danger.
I find this very interesting because since 1896 people in the world knew that doing certain things can cause bad reactions to Earth, the place we call home. Even with the warning signs and the PROOF that if we do A+B=C no one really does anything about it, or they act like they don’t care, or they do not believe it. Which is crazy because clearly for years there has been scientific proof. Even though some of us try to do our part, even if it’s something small, at least we are trying to help our world and picking up the slack of the people before us that didn’t want to do their part.

Global coffee consumption is growing at 5.5% a year, according to Mordor Intelligence. Coca cola plus coffee is available in over 25 international markets, with trial runs dating back to 2017. According to a bevindustry.com report the carbonated soft drink market declined 1.6 percent annually from 2012 to 2017. As consumers look for healthier alternatives and drink less sugary sodas companies have no choice but to adjust product lineups. Coca cola moves toward smaller cans, lower caloric intake, and lower sugar offerings, all without sacrificing taste. Coca cola topped sales expectations on wall street bumping its stock two percent higher. The Atlanta based beverage giant’s revenue grew eight percent. Coca cola plus coffee is the second attempt at blending the two beverages, its predecessor Coca cola Bla’k launched internationally in 2006 but failed to catch on and was later discontinued. After Starbucks and Kraft-Heinz, Mordor ranked Coca cola as the third largest global player in the coffee market. According to Mayo clinic, a typical eight-ounce cup of coffee has 95 to 165 milligrams of caffeine and a typical 8 ounce serving of coca cola has 24 to 46 milligrams. The Coca cola plus caffeine has slightly more caffeine than a typical can of coke but still less than what is in atypical cup of coffee. Further, Coca cola closed its England based Costa coffee. Costa coffee now joins Coca cola’s family of non-soda brands, including Dasani, Odwalla , and Honest Tea, that target the ever-growing base of health-conscious consumers.
Coca cola is a business genius. This company pays attention to what consumers want and immediately get on board. I feel kind of uneasy about a soda and coffee combination, however I do not drink soda and therefore have no skin in the game.

For this week, I decided to talk about the issue of global warming for this week’s journal response. An interesting article was published in the Los Angeles Times about the effects of global warming on birds in the Mojave Desert. The story starts by telling the reader exactly what it is about: birds are dying and global warming is the reason for this. Other birds in North America are also revealed to be affected by global warming before the article goes in depth, detailing the vast research that has been done in California and Nevada about the heat’s impact on these birds before concluding with the message that global warming must be addressed in order to save the different birds.
This article does make sense – how many times have there been cases of people or animals dying because of increasingly hot temperatures? Birds are no exception to this dilemma as evidenced by an excerpt of the article’s opening statement: “The animals’ bodies can’t cope with the hotter and drier weather brought on by global warming” (Khan). Different measures can be done to reverse global warming – recycling (as we have talked about in class) and the numerous other solutions mentioned in Project Drawdown. Another fact mentioned in the story which surprised me was how much research had been done in the California desert – 115 years’ worth.

In this weekly journal, I decided to write about global warming. Specifically, on the impact it has on the climate. UCSUSA put a brief summary of what the change has caused and is causing because of the continual growth of global warming. It mentions that temperature is getting hotter and is becoming more frequent due to the CO2 emissions being released into the atmosphere which stops heat from leaving the planet. It also mentions that the ones most affected are those that have the fewest “resources and options”. It also mentions how due to the increase in heat the ice is melting causing sea levels to increase, this increase affects all coastal areas. Another area mentioned is that this change in climate affect more than just previously mentioned but also causing an increase in natural disasters such as hurricanes or droughts to become more severe. The last thing mentioned is that because of the changing climate affects the economy and ecosystems by crops becoming more expensive to produce and destroying habitats respectively.
I found this interesting because we know the effects of climate change as they have been proven and scientists have deduced what is affected as climate change is much like a ‘domino effect’ where one thing changes and multiple change follow. This lack of change to reduce CO2 emissions just comes to bite just in the behind when not dealt with. This is especially seen when every summer we experience the ‘hottest’ summer according to the new. When the cost of reducing CO2 emissions the focus is mainly on the now, how much it will cost, and not how much we will save. When talking about how much we would save is the matter of not having to invest money on rebuilding such as when Hurricane Katrina happen which cost $125 billion in damages, not to mention death rates. This cost will become more frequent as climate change worsens and these natural disasters become even worse. The Brightside is that at the end of the page solutions are provided on the hyperlinked word ‘solutions’ to those who want to know what can be done to reduce the impact of CO2 and what can be done.

So I choose to look for something that has the solution to climate change. I found an articcle on The Washington Post, that talks about this specific topic. It goes on to explain what would be some great factors in reducing the climate change by making some minor changes in the world. How this has been previously discussed by previous presidents.
In this article they go on to talk about what it takes to restrain warming to much more livable levels, without having to lose large amounts of money or putting in danger any workers. By establishing a carbon tax, the plan would help tremendously. The average global price is $2 per ton we need $75 per ton. Taxing it would put a bigger burden on the upper-income bracket and would help low income households.

In this article, it discusses the previous-years of possible global warming conditions and its effects on our sea level since 1979. Satellite readings show that from the past 40-50 years, the sea levels have fluctuated multiple times. the constant rising and dropping of sea level has to do with global warming, because the rise of heat causes glaciers and ice caps to melt resulting in the rise of sea level. through years and years of this process, the arctic has lost about 20% of there original ice caps and are on the verge of losing up to half of its ice. if this happens, this might cause mid latitude weather to be more drastic then expected. not only would the weather be affected by the increase of solar radiation, but animals that live in the arctic would be affected too. polar bears thrive of the the ice environment, and when that is slowly but surely melting away, it causes them to either A try and find any other possible shelter or B slowly become extinct. the thinning of our ozone layer and the increase of solar radiation has caught the attention of may people and scientist that have the motive to fix a long awaited problem. to some people, this is not an issue at all, but it is. our own president even thinks that global warming is not true and will not pass bills or laws helping to prevent this massive issue. in conclusion this article relates to class discussions and gives great info on what has happened to our seal levels over time and what we can do to help prolong this issue.

In this rhetorical analysis of the Nike commercial “Short a guy”, this author is showing how Nike tugs at the strings of their consumers by selling to them that they could that guy that gets asked to play cause the players are “short a guy”. Nike shows how their product can be used for all types of sports and activities, which starts the feeling of the ethos appeal in their commercial. It does have some aspect of a pathos appeal because it trying to make their consumers gets excited and motivated to try and be part of the “we need an extra guy.”
While I do myself always tend to enjoy Nike commercials because not only do they entertain but the have truth behind their statements. Yes they are still a business and some of their practices in how they get their product to be made so good for so cheap so they make practices but in how they treat their athletes is different story. They value creativity and innovation for their athletes but they also stand behind their truth that they need to be right in the stance of social injustices. When it comes to their drive for always tugging at people’s emotions over topic so that Nike isn’t just a company but a culture that people chose over other products. Once the person puts on Nike they no longer feel like an average joe but now they are an athlete and just gives a sense of prestige.

President Donald J. Trump’s Efforts to Combat the Crisis at Our Southern Border Are Delivering Results
The article relates to the current immigration situation. It gives numbers on how many immigrants were apprehended each month and year. It also provides information on the wall being built and information on current events related to immigration.
I chose this article since it relates to class. We talk about Trump just about everyday and a great deal of pathos logos and ethos are here. It seems credible since it’s dressed all pretty, “whitehouse.org”;Our government wouldn’t lie to us right. It even says “Fact Sheet” on top. Gives us facts on how immigration improved last month compare to the month with 20% less border apprehensions made, but at the same time let us know they are still fighting hard on the war in the border by saying apprenhensions increased 88% from last year. Though we shouldn’t contradict ourselves since it hurts credibility, it shows us ways to use logos to support our claims. It also encourage me to find better sources then this one.
