Psychological research has shown how violent video games may influence an individual to be more impulsive and aggressive than others. The article is based on violent video games; which reviews myths, facts, and unanswered questions on the impact these games may have on people. I would agree and disagree with the research that is presented in this article
I selected this article because it’s relevant to our topic proposals; which deals with problematic situations. In this case, the article is perfect because it demonstrates the way a problematic situation may evolve from violent video games. Humans naturally imitate behaviors and actions that they perceive. For instance, When a parent is waving to their ten month child; the child would wave back. This example demonstrates how humans imitate actions that are being perceived; which is rational to deduce that violent video games may impact an individual with their behavior. However, violent video games may not have any significant effect on a person. Usually, the video games that use imagination do not have substantial impact on a person. But, if an individual were to frequently play grand theft auto; you might see some innovation that have initiated because of the game.
Nevertheless, why wouldn’t this topic be relevant? The class goes off topic multiple times and somehow appears to be relevant. Which defends my article to be relevant and not criticized because we referred rules for our class that were relevant to a video game; as well, the article gives evidence about the way violent video games may commence a problematic situation.

Alana Semuels discusses how large of an issue homelessness truly is, and what the United States could do to reduce it in her short article “How The U.S Can End Homelessness”. Semuels begins by addressing the first obvious solution that may be suggested and why is it ineffective- shelters. Shelters are ineffective due to the cost of operation, the unsafety it proposes as in 2018 there were 826 violent incidents in NYC alone, and the loss it may further cause. Many homeless have complained to advocates that they avoid shelters at all costs because they are forced to leave behind any sentimental or material items they have acquired. With that being said, Semuels proposes her solution: taking a housing-first approach, in which the homeless are provided a permanent house for a few months (free of cost) until they are in a healthy position to receive treatment for their possible drug addiction, disability, or ready to attain a new job. Giving these people a permanent home where they can sleep at every night and store their belongings creates a larger drive to “do better” vs. a shelter which is temporary, uncomfortable and unsafe. Utah has taken this housing-first approach and have reduced their chronically homeless by 72%- Semuels suggests we implement this approach across the states.
I chose to review a proposal on how to end homelessness because it is beneficial to take-note on the different strategies on how to approach an effective proposal. I found it interesting how Semuels organized her proposal- the article is broken down by section: Issue, Question, Answer, Question, Answer, etc. I intend to use this method when preparing to write my proposal in order to effectively address objections, or alternative solutions to what I find most effective. An article discussing homelessness is particularly useful to me as homelessness is a potential issue I may choose to dissect. I enjoyed Semuels article, I however would have liked to be further informed on any potential issues that may come with the housing-first approach, and how she believes the government will be able to overcome any of the possible delays.

In the article published by The Atlantic titled “Why Grades Are Not Paramount to Achievement” the author Ashley Lamb-Sinclair discusses the results of an experiement that her and her colleagues did at the beginning of the school year. For the first 6 weeks of school they did not enter grades into the gradebook but rather gave the students quality feedback on how they were doing in the class. Which allowed for the students to be more engaged in class and actually focus on mastering concepts rather than putting in all their efforts for a good letter grade. The results of the 6 week experiment concluded with teachers seeing their students more willing and eager to learn but, the time had come to start entering grades again. The teachers realized how important grades are for their students but challenged them to not only learn for the betterment of their GPA but to learn to gain knowledge they can use going forward.
I completely agree with this article because I can relate to it as a student. Sometimes the long semester can be frustrating and I can get consumed by the concept of getting a good grade rather than actually gaining the proper knowledge from the course. I picked this article because it reminded me of our conversation in class about why we should take college courses in order to gain wisdom from them rather than focusing on taking them just for the credits. It connects to our class as it directly relates to a concept we recently discussed and it something we can look at to re-energize us to learn for the right reasons.

In the Ted Talk above, a doctor, Dan Wozniczka, talks about a huge problem in the United States healthcare system. In summary, the Ted Talk basically gives a whole new perspective to changing healthcare. He starts off with the description of what a millennial is and really points out that a lot of people want to change something about the world’s problems, but never actually does anything to actually change it. They want to be the change, but they never actually contribute to what they desire in their heart. He points out that he loves the idea of medicine and helping people, but is extremely limited in carrying out his full potential, as a doctor, to actually do so. This is because of the fact that the US healthcare system is literally a business. Pharmaceutical companies and rich people with MBA’s own hospitals even though they’ve never actually cared for patients. Healthcare is a business and it needs to change for ourselves and the future generations. Dr. Dan gives one perspective on how to do that, and that is to cultivate future healthcare leaders to give a chance at change. Give future healthcare leaders the drive to eventually own hospitals and change the formula of pharmaceutical companies. He challenges the younger generations very well that want to go into medicine to be open to his perspective, stop worrying about yourself, and give yourself to something so much bigger than all of us.
My response to the Ted Talk is that I love the idea and I fully support it. I love the idea of making a change to the world and am willing to be a part of the change to do so. People need this. I’ve heard so many stories of people not being able to get healthcare or are too scared to do so because it’s so expensive. How and why is that logical at all? Other countries that have their own healthcare are doing better AND cheaper. Statistics show that there is a problem. I believe that it definitely won’t happen overnight, it will be difficult, but it is doable. I picked this because I love people and I wanna help those most physically in need. It connects to our class because we’ve been talking about problems in the world and finding a solution to it. This tugs at my heartstrings the most.

A problem in our country today is the income inequality gap. According to the Washington Post, “the separation between the rich and poor is at a 5 decade high. The census burea began studying the income inequality in 1967 using the gini index to measure the income or wealth amongst the population. It demonstrated inequality wealth growing slowly over decades. The article goes on to mention middle class and poverty earning families don’t seem to reap the rewards compared to wealthier families. The gap has widened between the wealthy and the poor. Our current gap shows where we are now is not any further than we were 20 years ago. Now the issue is becoming a huge topic in the 2020 presidential election.
The income inequality gap shouldn’t be as divided as it currently is. Bernie Sanders states, “There should be no billionaires, We are going to tax their extreme wealth and invest in working people.
I feel the statement is extreme in a way. I want the income inequality gap to be reduced, but saying there should be no billionaires doesn’t seem fair either. Some people have worked hard to create their net worth. Some billionaires have willingly invested back into charities and other organizations to help better the world. I do Believe no one should be exempt from taxes. The top tier of the gap should be taxed and invested back into society. I would like to see how this possible solution would help in reducing the gap. This article makes me want to research it more in depth to discuss more solutions or possibilities of how to make the income inequality gap smaller. I picked the income inequality article due to the growing problem at its highest. It’s an issue we have been dealing with for over 20 year and it still hasn’t been properly addressed.

Summary:
When something extreme happens resulting in the killing of one or many humans, the automatic thought is for the government or leaders to ban and disarm America. Although it may seem ideal for this to happen, it may just make the concerns of law-abiding citizens worse. Disarming those would allow those committing these crimes to take advantage and hurt others much easier. These shooters or terrorists looking to do damage go to areas that they know these individuals are most vulnerable. “Only one banned guns, posting signs warning permit holders that their guns weren’t allowed.” In the horrific tragedy in Colorado, the shooter went a theatre that he knew had permits not allowing those to have their guns within any theatre. A vast majority of these attacks are happening within small regions that are blocking those from carrying their concealed weapons. Our country as a whole has a strong will to try to protect those who live within the borders of it. Unfortunately taking away guns would significantly decrease the protection that we have as citizens of America.
Response:
I personally believe it would be hard to completely strip down the guns from all of those who contain them. Many individuals value their guns and would feel they are not as safe, in case a situation came along in needing to protect their family or themselves they would want to be able to do so using their weapon. I do believe that their does need to a stricter evaluation process for each and every one to own any sort of weapon. Taking away guns completely I do not see to be the appropriate answer, but we as a nation need to become more educated and understanding to this situation as a whole to put everybody’s best interest forward.

SUMMARY:
In the article School Shooters: What’s Their Path to Violence? it explains the psychology behind school shooters. It references a few psychologists as its sources. Most people find it hard to empathize for the shooter since the attack feels so personal, but there are multiple factors that contribute to these cases of shootings. The examples listed were living a hard life, mental health, depression, and not receiving treatment. It goes into more detail on the role that mental health problems play. Some of the factors include decreasing one’s ability to cope with stresses, having childhood traumas including abuse, and growing up witnessing violence or significant losses. These shooters start with being in despair and often if left alone it festers into anger and then revenge. There are also pitfalls when it comes to discipline in school that attribute to these cases.
RESPONSE:
This article is a good example of how people should step back, put themselves in someone else’s shoes, and look at a situation in the other persons perspective. I think that a lot of people want to automatically assume things are personal when it comes to something tragic. In all reality a lot of the reasons why these shootings are occurring is because a lot more people are feeling rejected by society, and especially now more than ever due to technology like social media. Instead of drills for students to practice in case of a shooter, schools should start staffing child psychiatrists and give every student at least on annual mandatory evaluation and for some cases provide free mental health treatment to kids in school.

Summary: This article discusses the decrease in Upland’s homeless population that they managed to achieve, even while the entire San Bernardino County ‘s homeless population continued to rise. The article also discusses the actions that Upland took in order to decrease their homeless population. Eric Gavin, the former coordinator of the Upland Community Restoration Team, mentioned that the city leaders of Upland took this issue (homelessness) very seriously and they worked very hard to come up with solutions that would provide actual results. According to Gavin, the city’s first action was to focus on finding homes for the homelessness, as opposed to involving any sort of law enforcement. The Community Restoration Team helped them to find housing, and connect with family that they may have lost touch with. One previously homeless individual , Vic Kelly, had been arrested by law enforcement numerous times, and it never once helped his situation. Kelly had been homeless for 17 years, until the Upland Community Restoration Team helped him find a place to live and reconnect with his family members. The article goes on to discuss the measure of homelessness that was taken in January of 2019. From 2015 to 2017, homelessness in San Bernardino County decreased. However, that number stared to rise again by 2018 and by January of 2019 it was the highest it had been in years. Upland had opposite trends when it came to the measure of homeless individuals. In 2015, Upland had only 166 homeless individuals. By 2019, only 58 people were homeless, thanks to all the measures taken by the Community Restoration Team. The next step of action after finding a home for the homeless, was to ensure they were set up with 12 months of follow up visits by various volunteer workers. This is to ensure the individuals are receiving any other help they may need, such as assistance in finding employment. Councilwoman Janice Elliott stated that the city is working on creating policies and strategies to continue to assist the homelessness population, and to find a way to measure the success of those policies they will put in place.
Response: I chose this article because when I read it, it reminded me of the discussion we had in class on Wednesday regarding different proposal topics. Homelessness was a popular proposal essay topic that came up. I am considering choosing it for my proposal paper, but I wanted to do some more reading on the topic first. This article provided me with possible solutions and more information regarding the issue of homelessness. I find the steps taken by Upland to combat homelessness were appropriate, successful, and well thought out. While reading the article, you could tell that a lot of thought was put into the measures taken by the Community Restoration Team. If every city and county put that much effort, though, and planning into combating homelessness, it would be significantly easier to solve this problem. The more cities we have following Upland’s lead, the better. They are a positive example for how to proactively and appropriately deal with the homeless, and they have proven that involving law enforcement is not always the answer to every problem. Los Angeles County should take note of their successes.

In the article, “Reality is Broken: All Games Share Four Defining Traits”, the writer discusses the fact that all games have four common traits. First, each game has a GOAL. While playing a game, the player strives to achieve the goal of the game. The second trait is the RULES of the game. There are rules to every game that each player must follow in order to play. Games also have a FEEDBACK SYSTEM. This system motivates the player to keep playing. The fourth trait is VOLUNTARY PARTICIPATION. Playing a game is always a choice. No one is forced to play.
As we discussed this in class, I agreed and got to thinking that different aspects of life can also be viewed as a game. There are goals that each of us have. It might be trying to get a raise at our job, passing our classes in school, or just being a better person. There are always rules that need to be followed. When working towards a raise, we need to follow the rules at our job in order not to get fired. A feedback system for passing our classes would be our grades. As we strive to pass the class and as we see our progress, it motivates us to keep trying. As far as voluntary participation goes, we all have a choice to “play” the game of life by setting goals for ourselves or not.

According to an article written by the US news and world dictionary titling Will fines are jail time fix the homelessness crisis? The article speaks about the growing number of homeless and give a statistic of about 59,000 homeless live in the Los Angeles city with the numbers increasing daily. With the belief held that the due cause to homelessness is the cost of living being to high forcing people onto the streets in turn fining the people. according to Maria Foscarinis she believes that the that the laws have a harmful affect on the homeless people and cause for more inhumane acts to be carried out which in turn causes for a depletion in the community diversity and the cognitive function of the sociological makeup. The actions taken to fine those with no possible way to track them caused for the city of Los Angeles to void out over 2 million citations that had gone unpaid by the rural peoples. As the impoverished people increase the cities try harder to remove them from sight to maintain their “value”.
I do not agree with the article that the best scenario to homelessness is taxation, fines and hiding the problem. I chose this article to bring light that the “solutions” being made are the wrong ones. If the government knows the cause, its time they fix it rather than forcing money out of a dry banking system. In avoidance to the situation at hand, the most logical response the government and states could do is to lower the cost of living. Rising taxes increasing fines and restrictions only pushes those who support the economy to leave and start a new life in a new state if fiscally able. This article relates to class because it is a topic we have discussed and it is a rapidly growing epidemic worldwide.

The article that I have chosen is a blog entry called Learner vs. Student: who do you want in your classroom? This blog was about a teacher’s point of view of the education system. More specifically the significance and the value of students being not only good students but good Learners. The author states that we as a society are not properly educating our children to be ready for our ever-changing world. The difference between a student into learner is that a student is simply someone who attend school to pass wear as a learner is someone who takes the time to learn and truly understand a subject. Learners should be empowered to share how they learn and should be able to succeed in school same way as other students do. This way students retain information and actually learn instead of simply following class structure and memorizing information they will forget immediately after they are tested on it.
The way that this particular article pertains to our class is with the comparison of Learners versus students. During our class the professor talked with us about how there is a significant difference between people who choose to actually learn in a class and those who simply want the passing grade. The goal for us as college students should not be just to pasrr classes but to gain as much knowledge as possible. People should be passionate about what they are learning and display it by not doing the minimum required to pass but by asking questions and actually being engaged in class until they truly understand the subject. Recognizing the difference between good Learners and students can help teachers structure classes in ways that reward students for knowledge gained. This way we get people who actually care and are passionate about the fields they are going to school to get into.

Is Global Warming is happening somewhere else? The reality is that it is happening and effecting us all, even right here in the Redlands/Yucaipa.
In the article linked above Gavin Schmidt said Earth as a whole is probably the hottest it has been during the Holocene — the past 11,500 years or so — meaning this could be the warmest period since the dawn of civilization.
The article gives supporting information to show that while in 2015 global leaders set a goal to prevent the earths overal temperature from rising 2.7* F and at this time the temperature has already raisen 2.2* F.
In the article is states the shocking fact that Alaska in 2019 was 6.2 degrees warmer than average, at 32.2 F. The sea ice levels are at a second lowest level in 40 years. It was the first time in recorded history that Alaska’s average annual temperature was above freezing. This stands out to me because simply having the average temperature above freezing should be an absolute evidence of polar ice caps melting, which is bound to result in rising sea levels. There were many facts listed in the article and the ones that i shared had the largest impact for me. They appeared to be the most significant. The thought of saying that Global warming is not real is not easily dismissed when we have documented facts to support the change. While we
While Volcano eruptions and Hurricanes are taken into consideration the overal problem has been “Human-caused climate change is responsible for the long-term warming”

In “Playing Games Can Build 21st Century Skills. Research Explains How,” Stephen Noonoo asserts that playing video games help stimulate the mind, it keeps the brain focused and satisfied. Noonoo attests through research that the brain is wired for pleasure. Therefore by playing games, certain skills are developed. However, not all games have to be digital. Games can be incorporated into a classroom for learning purposes. Katie Salen, a game designer and theorist, explains how it’s possible to learn in a classroom room through games. Kids can join Quest to Learn, where they can play and learn through games instead of having to learn from books and lectures. Stephen observes, “Socratic Seminars, a group discussion technique popular in English classes, were turned into Socratic Smack downs, where students earned points based on how well they structured arguments” (Noonoo). Also, games that are highly competitive can build persistence and help students work together as they try to achieve a common goal to win. Students are able to learn through interactions much faster, it keeps them engaged in the topic and are able to enjoy their education.
Through experience, students have shown to be interested in the class when games are played. This article ties with last weeks lesson, as we had to come up with ideas and rules, like a game, to pass the class. Last semester the class was analyzing a character in short story that was read. The character had done a lot of bad things that caused harm to others. In the classroom, we had to split into two groups to discuss the characters action through a trial. It kept the lesson engaging and everyone had fun doing it. Through that experience, students are able to focus and learn by playing games since they are having fun engaging with other people.

https://thelinkonlineems.net/628/features/grades-more-important-than-learning/
In this article by Kendra Pai, it explains the difference from learning and receiving good grades and how a students grades may not reflect the teachings that a student is learning. She goes on to say that students work hard for a good grade because that is all the teacher and parents care about. Parents are only interested if the student is passing by receiving A’s and B’s. The article explains how a student may copy homework not because they do not want to learn the material nor because they know the answer but because they want to receive the best grade possible. Students are under the impression that they have to receive good grades because that’s what colleges look at to decide whether or not they will be admitted to these colleges. Pai finishes by stating that “learning should be a priority in schools.”
The author’s stance on this issue is that she believes that students are not truly “learning” because they are focused on receiving good grades, which I agree with. Schools make it a priority and pressure students into believing that grades are everything. While good grades are essential to a students progress in school it may also be flawed because teachers and parents do not really know how much of the teachings the students are really retaining and learning. School would be useless if the students are not learning what they are being taught. It only teaches the students how to revive the best grade possible which may not be the same thing as learning. I believe that if a teacher is taking their time, going over the material in class, and making sure each student is learning, the grades will eventually reflect in their report card. This goes back to what was talked about in class, how a doctor who is book smart vs a doctor who assesses the situation and comes up with a solution. The book smart doctor will follow a guideline that may not coincide with every patient because every patient is different and may have different symptoms. Where as the doctor who learned how to assess and analyze each patient, they can provide the best solution for them. This shows the mentality of a person who worked to receive the best grade possible vs a person who took their time to learn the material, which makes it important especially in this occupation.

In the article that I found which was about homelessness gives other people options to what they can do to help homelessness in America. From transitional housing, to permanent supportive housing, drop-in centers, emergency shelters were just some of the options that we could use to help homeless people.
The article talks about about which options are the best for helping solve homelessness to the ones that though are still good with helping homelessness, won’t help solve it. The volunteers of America reach out to many homeless people around America and help them find a home or maybe even some benefits to help them get out of their situation easier. I believe the people to help homeless people are a gift. Because there are not a lot of people who take time out of their day to help people get back on their feet! It isn’t easy sometimes but what they do is truly a great thing for these people. People who are homeless are not just people who have a drug addiction, they can have a problem with their finances, lost their job, needed mental health care but didn’t have the money to cover it. Some people don’t have the financial help that others do to get themselves out of a rough spot and others don’t have family to fallback on when times get hard. I certainly believe as humans we can do a nice thing for people who are struggling with homelessness. You don’t have to donate tons of money but every little thing counts. Volunteer, offer to buy a homeless person food, offer even $5. Change begins somewhere but it isn’t easy. Everyone should always be grateful for everything they have, because there are always people out there who would want the simple things you have that take for granted.

In this Ted Talk Angela Duckworth explains the meaning if Grit and how people can be successful in our education and life. Grit is defined as passion and perseverance for very long term goals, as Duckworth explains. She (Duckworth) goes on to explain that we need to look at our life and education as more of a marathon and not a sprint.
When I heard this Ted Talk it reminded me of the story that Professor Ramos told us when he went to the ER when his eyes were on fire. Also, when he was expressed that he wants us to learn and not just to “pass the class”. I realized that if I truly want to reach my goals in life that I need to put Grit into action in my life. As students and as people we need to have an open mindset when it comes to learning and in life. I have found that by doing this my knowledge is not only improved, but depended. I learn so much more when I put my own thoughts and preconceived notions aside and try to look at both sides of the coin, and see the whole picture. I definitely agree with what Duckworth has said and will put Grit to the test as I take my stumbling blocks and turn them into stepping stones as I pursue my goals in life.

I choice an article on gaming called “Just an Hour gaming may improve attention” as we discussed in class because life is a game with rules and a goal getting too. If you just do an hour of gaming a day it can boost your focus and attention. It can help you focus on more important things and block out the less important things. There was a study in china where they had 29 people participate in and had them focus on a blinking box on one side of the screen. They had another box and had them say where the other box is on the screen to the one they are focussing on. They people with more gaming experience were better at it. but the people with less experience got better at it after they started gaming. This shows that gaming can help with focus and attention.
I believe that people should start gaming more as it can help better your life and be able to focus better what you are doing. If life is a game then we should use games to do better in life. As we discussed in class games pertain to college but we did not realize it can help you do better in life. You are able to focus better on school and what ever you are trying to do in life.

This article talks about the change in sex ed curriculum. In the past sex ed was taught as abstinence only. Now sex ed is being taught to show other ways about sexuality. Many parents are upset at the curriculum because it’s too vulgar and promotes sex instead of promoting abstinence. A lot of parents are protesting and confronting schools about the sex ed curriculum being taught to their children. Although there is an option to opt out of the sex-ed classes parents are still flustered over the fact that sex is being talked about in the schools. According to the article the different subjects that the new curriculum offers are healthy relationships, sexual abuse, sexual assault, dating violence, feelings, oral and anal sex, and clinics to get an abortion along with other sexual matters. There are also parents that feel is important to educate children and teens about sex for their safety especially if this subject is not talked about at home.
There are many articles like this that I encounter. Parents disagree or agree with the new sex ed curriculum. I partially agree with this approach. The reason why I partially agree is because I’m not certain what my district is going to be teaching exactly. I have heard different things. I do know every district has specific guidelines to follow but can teach different ways about sex following those guidelines. I myself am open with my children and have always been comfortable with having sex talks age appropriate. I understand that there are parents that do not talk about sex to their children at all. There are children that need this information or where else will they get it from. This relates to our discussion we had in class about a problem and a solution with subjects such as population control, educating women, and setting different standards for our youth. I believe this is an important topic because it’s the jumpstart to what the youth will eventually have to deal with.

1.The article, by Amy Swearer, discusses the potential correlations between mental health and atrocious tragedies like suicide and mass shootings. The article begins by mentioning the ways in which media has perpetuated the discussion on mass shootings to be one of gun control; ignoring the factors of mental health prevalent in the shooters. The article discusses that if a person has issues in mental health, it doesn’t automatically make them a danger to themselves or others. However, two thirds of the mass shooters reported before February of 2019 were identified to have mental health disorders. As the author points out, perhaps if the they had gotten proper treatment, they wouldn’t have gone to such horrific extremes. This isn’t guaranteed though. In fact, there is no objectively defined way of knowing how much of a factor mental health plays into mass shootings as of now. In regards to suicide, the article explores how gun control doesn’t play into much of an effect. In fact, it states that in the U.S., where there is less control, there is less suicides. This is in comparison to places like the U.K., which has more control, but also higher suicide rate. The article claimed that measuring suicide is less about mental health and more about the socioeconomic state of a given time or place. Things like divorce rates, job opportunities, and the economic status play a much bigger role.
This article pertains to the problems discussed in class. The article wasn’t as clear and deliberate on the statistics it was referencing and thus shouldn’t be quoted verbatim in an academic discussion. However, the ideas explored and represented in this article are extremely interesting as it points out some thought provoking arguments. I would need a lot more resources and data before judging the validity of this article or assessing whether or not I agree with it. Nonetheless, it was good first step into the discussion of mental health and proves as a decent read.

What is climate change? How do we know if climate change is caused by humans? This article explains what causes climate change is and what kind of damage it is causing over time according to geographical research. According to Donalds research there are 4 major issues he goes over
This article does a great job explaining the damage we have already done this past 100 years. We can tell climate change is primarily human induced just by doing studies on nature and simply charting when a dramatic change occurs. In the 1900s the North Pole was complete covered in ice even during summer. If you fly over the North Pole in the summer now, there is not a single piece of ice in sight. This dramatic effect causes many harmful outcomes, such as habitat change. How does a mother polar bear hunt or even travel with her cubs when the ground beneath her is completely gone due to our actions and lifestyles. If everyone continues to ignore this issue the Arctic and Greenland will vanish. And it will not just be them. Donald explains his geological research concludes if all of the ice on this planet melted, every city near the coast will most likely be submurged underwater.

The issue discussed in the article is why the American education system is failing to work in a way that actually allows students to grow and learn properly. The author believes that some of the largest issues contributing to this are the lack of teachers passionate about the subjects they teach, the prioritizing of test scores over what was actually learned, and the one-size-fits-all type of education system that is implemented into the country’s public schools. The author makes the compelling argument that, if this quality and type of standards are not accepted in the workplace, it shouldn’t be seen as acceptable to teach the future generations. Another belief is that just by having a teacher who is passionate about the subject, it can change whether or not the class is mediocre or impactful on the students. And finally, be getting rid of the one-size-fits-all structure put into place, teachers will be able to help students with different needs, struggles, or abilities properly.
After the discussion our class had on Wednesday, I felt like I should dig deeper into why the American education system is far below where it could be in terms of quality and success. It seems like our lack of passionate teachers is definitely part of the problem. There seems to be only a handful of teachers from public schools that kids really seem to remember fondly. Often times it’s the most passionate, flexible, understanding, and outreaching teachers. The teachers that care about a quality of education seem to have the most trust with students and the most impact. My mother is a high school teacher who was in the medical field for years prior to her teaching career. She now teaches mental health and medical terminology, both subjects she’s passionate about. And after working in various hospitals and obtaining a bachelors in psychology, it’s clear that she cares about the subjects she gets to teach. When I did volunteering in her classroom last semester for my community service, I noticed how she engaged with all the students in different ways, including those with financial or mental disadvantages. And while she gave a considerable workload to her students, a good majority did their assignments on time, and those that needed an extension date often received one. I had also seen several students come up to her with issues and whether it was topics dealing with the class itself or trouble at home, she provided them with a safe space to be honest in and actually offered solutions to each student. She also has several students who kept in touch with her after graduation, many of which she found places to help start their careers in, including my own boyfriend who built a close bond with her, due to her support towards his dream career, years before we had met. After personally seeing the impact a great teacher can make, I find it clear that we need more passionate and understanding teachers put into our country’s education system. It may help to also have teachers who specialize better with different types of learners or those with disabilities. By having teachers who are better educated on how certain brains, such as ones with high functioning Autism, work we can accomplish more goals in educating people with disabilities. Classes could also possibly be assorted by placement tests to see what teacher is best fit for each students’ learning style and/or needs. I feel that we have a better chance fixing the system by making communications with the students’ needs more open and by hiring teachers who will be happy to engage the students in their subjects.

T his article approaches gun and school safety differently than most sources. It includes where the root of the issues really are which could be underlying mental illnesses. Within the last few years more of a light has been shown upon mental illnesses and psychological disorders however, connecting it to the uprising gun violence within schools is some thing more rare to be discussed.
as a response to the text discussed above, I do see the importance in determining mental illnesses as an approach to preventing school shootings. As someone who has researched mental illnesses I think it could be a great method for the issue at hand. I don’t Believe that mental illness is an excuse for the issue however, it is commonly noted as the reasoning/motive behind these events in eyes of the law. so if mental illness is really a cause behind these actions then providing extra attention on to the areas rather than ignoring them could be beneficial.

In one of the most watched 2006 Ted Talks of all time , Sir Ken Robinson , British author and creativity expert makes his case on creating an education system that nurtures creativity rather the undermining it. He talks about the importance of creativity in the education system being just as important as literacy and that today’s industrialized education system teaches children not to be wrong . Sir Ken argues in order to be creative you have be able to also be wrong or will never come up with anything original. He goes on how the fostering of creativity demands an environment that permits mistakes and that there are multiple types of intelligence variety of ways kids can learn. . Schools focus more on teaching kids to pass tests and go to college to become better workers rather then to think outside the box as creative thinkers.
I think that Sir Ken makes a good case and that kids can teach themselves anything they put their minds to. Allowing kids to become more active instead of passive in the classroom can teach them how to ask more questions, analyze content, solve problems, group discussions , and team work that allows more participation and creative thinking . Some kids such as those who have Adhd are integrated into behavioral intervention programs rather then recognized as learning and developing differently . Allowing different views and fresh ways of looking at something encourages students to take more active roles in classroom discussions as well and allow students not to be so afraid of having a wrong answer.

JACLYN GALLUCCI writes about the multi-billion-dollar business of sex trafficking and how there is an epidemic in the U.S currently. Human trafficking is estimated to bring in global profits of about $150 billion a year—$99 billion from sexual exploitation, according to the International Labor Organization. Nearly 9,000 cases were reported in the U.S but that data is incomplete due to the cases that are unreported. Jaclyn sheds some light on the groups of young and older women that are targeted for sex trafficking; she also has the pleasure of speaking to Cindy McCain who chairs the McCain Institute’s Human Trafficking Advisory Council. Her and her team work hard to keep us updated and do the most to help those who need the help. She is a survivor and her life mission is to decriminalize the act of prostitution.
RESPONSE: I honestly was reading the list that Mr. Ramos posted in class that we all contributed to and went down the list and researched a couple of the topics. I chose to write about sex trafficking because I myself was unaware of the large epidemic in the U.S and the different types of sex trafficking there was, I became interested. I was oddly curious about this topic way back (a couple of years go) I know of a few friends that did webcamming and I’ve met a few women that prostitute and some that strip at clubs. I’ve watched several documentaries and YouTube videos and interviewed some of my friends about this. Again, I thought prostitution was not that big of a deal compared to other places but I was wrong it’s a huge problem. I used this journal to try and help me decided what ill be writing for my proposal.
