MLA Style
Why do we cite sources in academic writing?
We will be going over the 8th edition MLA citation Style. You can look under our resources page for MLA or APA guides. There are three things to consider for each style guide you use:
- Page Formatting
- In-Text Citations
- Works Cited/References Page
Why we cite.
- Establishes credibility.
- A road map. Scholarship is an ongoing conversation.
- It gives credit. Acknowledges those that contributed to your ideas.
In-Text Citation
Also called parenthetical citations.
One Author: (Ramos 1)
Two Authors: (Smith and Ramos 1)
Three or more Authors: (Ramos et al. 1)
The Art of Summarizing
Chapter 2 explains how to write an extended summary. We will be working with this today moving into beginning our essays. Careful you do not write a list summary or “closest cliche”. The book treats summary and paraphrase similarly. Keep in mind that you will also be using quotes.

What literacy are you going to write about? What moment are you going to focus on? Summarize the literacy you have learned.
The topic I’ll be discussing is when my car broke down from overheating. It would of cost a lot more if would have took it to a mechanic. So I decided to learn how to take out the engine and replace a new one, learning what to take off and how to put in parts.

The literacy i am going to write about has to do with makeup. I will talk about how i learned to do my makeup and how I am still learning. I will write about who taught me and my first time doing my makeup by myself.

I feel like for me it would be easier to write about an internal literacy rather than external one. So as for the literacy I’m going to write about learning to let go, with that I feel I can go really in depth with the steps I took to learn to let go. Just with so much going on some things/people you can’t hold on to forever and even though it’s a hard topic; it’s something that has to be done.

The literacy I am going to be writing about is self love and acceptance, I had trouble accepting who I truly am for a long period of time, I never really felt myself, but now I do. The process took years, and I’m finally happy with who I am and how I deal with things that happen to me on a personal bases. Before I used to let things get to me and now I sorta just have a “I don’t care” attitude towards many things. The moment I will be focusing on is a toxic relationship I was in where this person tried to change me and every aspect in my life, and tried to make my entire life revolve around them, it took awhile to notice and realize that I would be fine without them.

The literacy I would like to write about is how I learned to play basketball over the course of 8 years. I would like to focus on how I first started learning, my failures and my successes. (making the local newspaper to limping off the court with broken bones). Overall I learned a lot about how to play the game correctly and play as a team because basketball isn’t a single player sport, it is a team experience.

For my literacy narrative, I am stuck between two things, but today I will be focusing on one. What I will be talking about is the nights I took an online Driver’s Ed class. Luckily, it only took me about a week to complete because it was only 11 lessons with a quiz at the end of each one, then a big test at the end. Taking the Driver’s Ed class was my first step in learning to drive, but it was also the easiest. Since then, I have been taking lots of different practice permit tests on my phone. What the hardest part of this all is, is that just like my older brother, I have to pass my permit test before I am allowed to go behind the wheel. I feel as if being behind the wheel will help you with real-life scenarios and help with the permit test, but instead I observe my parents when they drive since I’m not able to.

I plan to write about my journey with weight loss last year. I’m going to focus on what made me want to lose weight and how I actually went about losing weight. In short, I was really unhappy with my appearance and felt constantly tired and unmotivated to work, so I decided I needed to make a change. I was talking to a friend and he told me about the “keto diet”. I did some research to see what I needed and started on the January 8, 2019. I would eat zero carbohydrates and went out for walks everyday. Over time I saw progress and started to feel a lot more energized. After around 8 months, I had lost 100 pounds and felt so much better about myself. I was so proud of myself for sticking to my diet and completing my goal that I thought was impossible.

The literacy I am going to write about will be how I’ve learned/learning how to change negative thoughts into positive thoughts using Dr. Joe Dispenza books, interviews, and interesting contexts I’ve come across besides Dr. Joe Dispenza. I am going to focus on how negative thoughts at one point of my life lead me into depression. I’ve learned by Dr. Joe Dispenza you can heal by changing our energies, to change the electromagnetic field we are constantly broadcasting.

I am going to be writing about how I learned to swim. It was not super easy for me to learn and I believe it will turn out to be a good story. Within my time learning how to swim, I am going to be focusing on the time when I actually started to get the hang of swimming. It was a very intense moment, but there were so many emotions that I felt, and it was the turning point of my literacy in swimming. Unlike a lot of people, I learned how to swim by being pushed into a pool and being told to swim, which was incredibly scary, but other options of learning had not worked for me up to that point. My step-father was the person who gave me that metaphorical and physical push, and to this day, I am thankful for that.

The literacy that I’m going to write about is cooking. I’m going to focus on the moments when I was younger and my dad was teaching me how to be safe within the kitchen and use the kitchenware properly. My dad taught me how to not cross contaminate food, to maintain a clean cooking environment, and how to cook foods properly without hurting myself.

Overwhelmed, tears streaming down my face as I’m on the edge of screaming my lungs out. Over what? Cooking. I had burned the food and there were flies assaulting me relentlessly, insulting my dish before it was even complete. Looking back, my reaction was hilarious and infantile. Those moments of uncontrolled outbursts are what I want to write about, I want to talk about my journey to managing stress and letting things go. There have been many times throughout my life where I have lost control of my emotions over little more than spilled milk.In a time so full of fear and stress, I am certainly glad I have become more capable of managing it than in my past.

I haven’t completely settled on a literacy just yet but have been leaning towards a new recipe I am trying out. This recipe is a Salmon pasta with spinach. It has been made once before but was missing something so I have been trying to perfect. This is also a recipe I’d like to perfect with chicken for those who don’t eat salmon. The moment I am focusing on is the finished product and how well it was enjoyed by others and my daughters which will be the real success. The first try left more to be desired but was still good we have more hope in the second try which will be done in the next night or two.

A literacy I am considering writing about is sewing because I was a massive failure at it–at first. I will focus on a pair of shorts I hand-sewed from my old bed sheets before I had a clue what I was doing. They were horrendous to say the least. After some help from my grandma, her domestic-engineering skills, and lots of practice, sewing became something I would work on everyday and come to love more now that I was literate in it.

The literacy that i am going to write about is learning how to use computers, I grew up in a time when computers did not exist, and where not used for everything, I took a course last year and will be taking one more course on September 17. Taking this additional class will help me do better in school and my job.

I am currently taking my california real estate course. The starter course is 135 hours long and I am given 6 months to complete it. I am learning all about California’s real estate laws and regulations. I want to complete this course as fast as I can so I can jump in the market soon. The faster I get experience as a residential agent, the faster I can work on my own as a commercial broker. I find it to be really interesting and I’m excited to get my license within the next couple months.
