Week 15 Journal Response 4/30 – 5/4
Sorry this is so late.
Focus on causal relationships this week. Look for stories related to cause and effect. Try to make a connection to the different causal relationships we have been studying this week.
Make sure to include a link, summary, and analysis. Minimum 250 words. Comment below.

This is a link to a story about bottle flipping. Not too long ago a trend started among middle school aged children. It is to take a water bottle that is about one third of the way full of water, flip it in the air and land it up right on a surface. Suddenly a lot of kids were doing it and, in the process, driving some parents nuts (and maybe not only the parents). This story tells how it originated. A young man named Michael Senatore and his friends took this up as a hobby among themselves and Michael became very good at it. Later on he realized had nothing for his high school talent show and decided to flip a bottle for his act. He played some music and hammed it up, and of course he nailed the landing. That performance was caught on video by an audience member and uploaded to YouTube where it received five million views. It became so popular that Michael got an appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.” Michael is now in college and it still makes him smile when he sees a kid flip a bottle. I chose this story for the causal relationship we have discussed in class. This article explains the chain of events. I guess to say, one young man finding himself without an act for a talent show, caused a huge trend of bottle flipping among middle schoolers.

In the Washington Post, Lindsey Bever wrote the article, “Hawaii Might be About to Ban Your Favorite Sunscreen to Protect its Coral Reefs,” which she discussed the causes for Hawaii legislatures to ban sunscreens that contain “oxybenzone and octinoxate,” in order to protect Hawaii’s coral reefs. These two chemicals are commonly found in most sunscreens, which are linked to harming the coral reefs. In addition, Bever acknowledges that some companies and association disapprove of banning certain sunscreens by arguing that sunscreens protect consumers from skin cancer and are FDA approved.
This article demonstrates causal relationships among banning certain sunscreens in Hawaii by illustrating the causes that attributed towards legislatures passing the bill. In order for sunscreens to harm coral reefs, humans have to wear sunscreen while swimming in the ocean. This is a necessary cause because the problem requires humans to be wearing sunscreen and swim in the ocean in order to effect coral reefs. Legislatures believe the bill to ban certain sunscreens will protect coral reefs because sunscreen is found to be a remote cause to damaging the coral reefs. Sunscreen is a remote cause because it is a distance cause to the lack and destruction of coral reefs. Lastly, Bever acknowledges that sunscreen is not the only factor which damage coral reefs. Bever quoted the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History, which explained the necessity of coral reefs and illustrated the additional contributing factors that damage coral reefs. These contributing factors include, “Overfishing and destructive fishing, pollution, warming, changing ocean chemistry, and invasive species,” (Smithsonian). These are contributing factors because they also produce a danger for coral reefs. Overall, the necessary cause, remote cause, and contributing factors inspired Hawaii legislatures to pass a bill to ban sunscreens with oxybenzone and octinoxate, in order to protect the coral reefs.

In this picture we see Dr. Martin Luther King and others peacefully protesting racial injustice and Jim Crow laws. Jim Crow Laws made it legal for African Americans to work at jobs that didn’t give much pay, they had to stay in the ghettos, and they were targeted and discriminated against. This also made it easy for African Americans to become targets of racism and abuse. Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat in the bus which violated the segregation law. This led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott where African Americans boycotted busses and the transportation industry lost a lot of money. The March on Washington convinced Congress on the amount of support that backed the Civil Rights Act. It showed that most Americans were in favor of integration and in support of equal rights for all citizens. The cause in this case is the Civil Rights movement and the effect was the desegregation and that The Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act were passed during this time. If Dr. King and other activists would not have felt the need to bring change and stand for what they believed in, then who knows how long it would have taken for change to come. Their cause brought on some of the positive outcomes, or effects. Their actions inspired many to demand better treatment, equal opportunities, and to be able to live in better neighborhoods. Although some still resisted the integration there was nothing they could do about it.

Causality, or better known as cause and effect, is the natural or worldly agency or efficacy that connects one process with another process or state, where the first is partly responsible for the second, and the second is partly dependent on the first. Summarized, this means the relationship between cause and effect and the principle that everything does have a cause.
This picture is trying to show that smoking can in fact lead to lung cancer, but not in all cases. Sometimes, people may have a “hidden factor” that leads to them contracting the disease. They may have been exposed or genetically inclined to have had lung cancer and not from the sole purpose of smoking.
I believe that this picture could also be used to explain that correlation does not in fact imply causation. This means just because there is a correlation between the variables does not mean that one variable causes the other. We see here, just because one act is being done, that there could be an affect, although there are factors that do make it undetectable.
In conclusion, we see how correlation does not imply causality. We can add this to real life with smoking, just because one smokes and gets cancer one cannot be so sure that it came solely from the smoking. There are underlying effects that many cannot see.

This article blog post from Tumblr is about an explanation behind relational behavior between women and men and how it differs for types of relationships. It starts off with an image of a tweet of a document stating “a woman’s idea of ‘let’s be friends’ is ‘hey listen to all my problems and keep me company… while I have sex with someone else” with the comment above stating “so a woman’s idea of being friends is being friends?” Which is a great intro to the explanation behind why men and women think differently when it comes to friendship. Due to society being patriarchal, men have been raised to keep their emotions in tack and hidden away while women were raised to be able to talk through their emotions with friends or family. The comment below the image goes on to explain how in psychological studies and sociological studies, “men are known to, on average, rely entirely on their female romantic partner for emotional support”. This is where the patriarchy comes in again. Women are allowed to be emotional and have support from their female friends because in this society, it is expected and allowed for them. For men, however, they are not allowed this luxury and are instead expected to bottle it up and keep it buried unless they have a female romantic partner they can unload to. They mention how women expect emotional intimacy and support in friendships and if it’s not provided, they are not friends. Men are brought up to believe that they are only able to show emotion with their female romantic partners. This is where they continue on with a disconnect.
When you have a man and a woman as friends, just friends, a disconnect can happen due to upbringing. Women expect emotional intimacy and support in friendships while men expect it in relationships so this misinterpretation of their friendship leads the male friend to believe there is a romance where there isn’t. This continues on to talk about how women who are widowed or divorced have much higher rates of surviving it due to the support from their female friends. Then it leads to the hurt and pain this disconnect causes. Women are hurt and suffer from this because if they reach out for solely a friendship, but the male friend is actually just trying to get into her pants. Now of course, there is is no mention of “all men” doing so but due to the training and teaching of emotional support or lack thereof for men, they can come to expect a sexual or romantic relationship when they share their emotions with a woman. But this disconnect doesn’t just hurt the women. It comes into play when the bottled up emotions come exploding out. When they are expected to bottle the emotions and women aren’t there to help let the emotions out, this is where the rage can come from; “men who are suffering deep emotional trauma, and have been trained to channel their personal trauma into rage because they can’t share it, become mass shooters, or rapists, or misogynists”.
The reason I chose this to analyze is because of that last line. The whole of this piece of writing on emotions is fantastic and when I saw it I was hooked and shocked by what I had seen. But once it got to that line I knew there was a reason behind my thoughts that emotional intelligence always ties in, in some way. Due to men not being allowed or taught to unload emotions except on to women, a disconnect will happen and can ruin friendships for the two in some cases. But in other extreme cases, I agree with what the author said about how emotional trauma and the training of conveying through rage, can and will lead to rapists and mass shooters. This chain of events is both a necessary cause as well as the contributing factors enlaid in these events. They are necessary causes because emotional trauma is always dealt with differently but unless it is let out and talked through with a therapist or close friend, it is a leading factor to the destruction of said person. The next is a contributing factor but also a proximate cause. It is easy to see, in society, how men are raised and trained to bottle emotions and how the easiest way to channel said emotions is through rage and aggression. It contributes to the emotional range and capacity of the person and how it is a link in the chain. The ultimate happenstance, which is post the precipitating cause, which can also be the emotional trauma, is when the person turns to the more mild misogyny or to the extremes such as rape or mass shootings. I believe that this chain of events can lead to and cause people to turn to mass shootings and rape.

In the United states we have a major issue on obesity. Our overall population has a higher percentage of obese people compared to most of the other countries. In the front cover of Time magazine they illustrated this problem on their front cover. The picture was a young male made from the United States eating a burger, which was also made from another state. This illustrates the united states eating habits. Eating habits is a sufficient cause for the obesity in the United States. Eating all the greasy, fattening, processed food directly causes obesity. Without a proper balanced diet will cause many health issue. The biggest on being obesity. Another sufficient cause can be genetics. Sometimes people are just more prone to be obese compared to others. A remote cause for obesity would be lacking exercise. Without any exercise we won’t be the healthiest versions of yourself. Now this does not mean not doing any exercise will cause people to be obese, but it does contribute. Sitting on the couch all day (remote cause) while eating chips and junk food(sufficient cause) will increase your chances of being obese. In most causes there is always sufficient causes and remote causes.
In this week’s lecture we discussed about causes and effects. How there is different kinds. Some directly contribute , while others just have correlation with it. This article cover of time magazine can be analyzed to figure out some sufficient causes and some remote causes.

Following a Catholic Priest who is a gay rights activist is such a fun way to get news, I would 10/10 recommend. Earlier this week, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan asked for the resignation of Father Patrick Conroy the official Chaplain of the House of Representatives on the grounds that he was not fulfilling his pastoral duties. Many believed at the time, and still do, the Father Conroy was dismissed because he criticised the Republican tax plan, which was mostly by Speaker Ryan, because it would hurt the poor and downtrodden. In this article, it is discussed why the order that Father Conroy belongs to perfectly explains why he was cut from the position. Since its inception, the Society of Jesus (more commonly referred to as the Jesuits) has had the duty of speaking truth to power, attacking church officials and often being killed for it. They research and question the book of revelations and work to constantly defend those most on the outskirts. The editor of the Catholic Magazine of America was removed from power because he refused to stop speaking in defense of HIV/AIDS patients, and gay people. The cause of Father Conroy’s dismissal is that the order he joined has committed itself to attacking those with the most power to make them pay. The resulting effect of him doing his duty is his being asked for his resignation.
One week after declaring he would oblige Speaker Ryan’s order of resignation, and in true Jesuit fashion, Father Conroy announced he was rescinding his resignation. He instead, asked that Ryan fire him.

In this video and article it shows a 15 year old girl and her mother on the tv show Dr. Phil. The 15 year old Nicolette took her mother to the show so that they can settle on a money amount of what her mother should be giving her every month. Nicolette did not have a budget until she decided to spend almost 10,000 a month. She expects 5,000 dollars but will settle for 2,500. Her mother on the other hand left it at 1,000. This conflict all started because her mother spoils her way more than she should be. Nicolette expects money every month. Her mother said she gives her money every month from guilt of being a single mom who is never home. That should be no excuse. Now her mother is being treated like a piggy bank because she is use to getting what she wants. Nicolette claimed that her 1,000 dollar budget makes her “feel like a peasant.” Her behavior led to people lashing out all over social media claiming she is spoiled and should be sent to a third world country to learn that life isn’t that easy and she should be grateful rather than being a brat. This week we discussed cause and effect. The cause of this situation was based on her mother feeling guilty and tried to use money as a problem solver. The effect was turning her daughter into a greedy person who is use to getting what they want but once reality hits her she will be in for it.

As we are still talking about monsters i chose to do it on a recent person who up till now was under the radar. Not only did nobody suspect him but he was also in a position of power but also in a position where you are out to protect the people. Not hurt them. I am talking about the Golden State Killer. Not only is his actions just atrocious but the fact that is truly scary is that he was considered a good person. Someone who in the 70’s/80’s was a police officer and although we refer to people who are out to protect our rights and lives how scary is it that it’s someone who looks just like us. This man was accused of at least raping 46 women and killing about a dozen people. On top of that he also committed countless of robberies. This is just ridiculous to even think about. The act in itself of 1 of these crimes is already sickening as it it but to repeat the acts and to have such an enormous number is the characteristic of a true monster. He’s a monster for the trauma he has committed to all those women. Both psychologically and physical. As well as all the family and loved ones of the ones lost to his murders. Stealing from others as well. This is not a man but a monster. He has crossed a line that only some may think about and has done it multiple times. There is no going back from this and there is nothing that he can do to. We don’t know what has led him to be the way he whether it be something in his past or something in him that has led him to naturally become a monster.

This video is of a comedian named Trevor Noah. He gives insight of what is currently ongoing around the world in politics. In the video he explains how the north and South Korea reached a consensus. This was a huge deal for a lot of countries. Currently we viewed this as an agreement being that commodious that has happened in the world. This cause arbitrarily has a lot of effects for countries around the world. This relieves how a future war was prevented. Primarily with South Korea and the United States was the most arised tensions. It effects South Korea greatly by having both countries be semi-united in a way where there is no differences and or wars that should begin. This I think also effects us here in the U.S by diminishing the threat from North Korea nuclear attacks. The agreement was to remove nuclear weapons from North Korea and in return not let the United States invade North Korea. This peace treaty reduces the tension between the two countries from releasing nuclear war. This I think helps the world inform more about North Korea and what form of influential tactics were used for the citizens in the country. Although trump might have different plans on engaging with the country, it probably would have another effect that I think could have been much severe. This connects to the lessons in class currently with the cause and effect idea. This topic is quite important for the world because these two countries have been with grievances with each other for at least 6 decades. My thought on this topic is that it should aid our connection and understanding of the dictorial ruler Kim Jong il. Cause and effect is a profound idea especially in every aspect of this world as it could affect assumptions, ideas and perspectives. As it relates to our discussion in class, it also helps understand how it may cause a chain of events and alter what outcomes may surface as a conclusion. On the other part of the video the comedian also explains how trump took the credit for the unification of the two counties. This could have a lot of backlash and revolts from people that don’t agree at all with that view. I think as trump was stating that opinion, it might effect the people from the United States on the matter.

This is an article that discusses how waves are caused. There are three major causes for waves in the ocean that are mentioned within this informational article. The first cause is caused in large part to the powerful gravitational pull of the sun and the moon as well as the drop off on shore which influences the strong rip curls that we see from shore. These types of waves are also known as tidal waves. These waves intensify as they move closer to the shore.
The second cause mentioned within the article is influenced by severe weather. Severe weather is also identified as the major cause of hurricanes, which is where storms can wipe out towns that are located close to the shore. Many people have died from these intense types of waves.
The third and final cause is identified as wind friction. Much like the dessert, the mountain-less terrain found across the ocean influences intense wind which in turn produces ripples across oceans and lakes. This is most commonly found on the shoreline. Wind friction also has a tendency to produce white caps on the tops of the waves that can be spotted from a far in order to determine the level of intensity for sailing a boat across the ocean. These types of waves are also influenced by several types of natural occurrences such as volcanic eruptions, earth quakes, and landslides.
Waves are a product of energy that is passed through the ocean. These energy waves travel across the entire ocean until disrupted by another force.

Jodi Arias is a women who was convicted of murdering her ex-boyfriend, Travis Alexander on June 4th 2008. Travis and Jodi met at a Las Vegas work convention in 2006 and they instantly connected. They lived in different states, so they began a long distance relationship. Jodi was so into Travis that she decided to convert to his religion, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. A little less than a year later, the pair break up but continue to see each other often for casual sex. Desperate to win him back, Jodi moves to the state that Travis resides in, Arizona. However, after a year of trying, she is unsuccessful in winning him back. Travis begins seeing another woman, which this angered Jodi and made her snap. She steals a .25 caliber gun from her grandparent’s house and sets off on a road trip to Utah to see a love interest. On her way there, she stops by Travis’ house unannounced. The two have sex, and shortly afterwards, she stabs him to death in his shower. During her trial, the prosecutors argued that Jodi was obsessed with Travis; she wanted him all to herself. So when she found out he was seeing another women, she decided to end his life. This would be an example of a precipitating cause; after more than a year of failing to win him back, finding out he was seeing someone else was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Jodi Arias is currently serving life in prison for taking Travis’ life.
